I’m afraid the coop will be too warm for them at night and they’re so used to roosting, they’ll just bake themselves in there!
Nighttime temps during this heatwave will only fall to the 80’s.
Any good ideas for cooling the coop at night? Ice blocks in the corners? Anything? Or will they be ok?
Can I use a water refresher additive to keep algae away?
I’m leaving for 4 days, but I’m having to wash their waterer everyday to clean off the algae. And I’m trying to avoid it, at least while I’m gone.
Any other tips to prepare them for 4 days in South Carolina are welcome! I have someone...
Question about my girl Cheeks..
She’s about 6 months old and laying. Friday, we got a rooster, who is about 8-10 months old. Because I knew the people he’d been with and how he’d been raised, introducing him to the flock (of 6) went very well!
But last night and tonight I’ve noticed Cheeks is...
Getting a new rooster tonight and I’m ready for introduction with a dog crate. My question is…can he sleep in the crate? (In the enclosed run, of course). He can’t “roost” in it. Am I being too weird about this?
My plan was to keep him in the crate, in the run tonight and tomorrow, then let...
I have a 6 month old chicken who’s been laying since March. Everything was fine. Today when I got home I found her a bit lethargic, tail down and acting almost confused. I thought she might be getting ready to lay.
I went back to check on her about 30 minutes later and found her pecking at this...
I can’t attach a video for sound, but my pulley is humming. I have 6 month old girls. All have started laying. Today I noticed this leg bar making a humming noise. I know they have sensitive respiratory systems, but their coop is dry, clean and dust is minimal in their run.
Just hoping she’s...
A neighbor has offered a 5 month old rooster from her flock to ours (I have 6 month old girls). But I don’t want babies.
I know the benefits of having a rooster and would love to take him, but how do I prevent chicks?? She says to collect eggs everyday, but how do I know which are fertilized...
It’s 80 degrees here in the day, 60’s at night. The girls have feathers, but are not all feathered in. I hated having them in a bedroom and thought they’d enjoy some sun and fresh air. So I moved their brooder outside today.
They’re in a fenced in backyard under a porch. They still have their...
I’m wondering if anyone has a cover for their chicken coop entrance that cuts down on drafts and weather issues, while allowing the chickens to enter and exit freely?
I am making the final touches on our coop (prefab) and run (metal) before the babies get out there. If I missed anything, please let me know. We do have coyotes out here. And the occasional loose dog.
So…I have changed all the crappy latches, secured the window sliders, hardware clothed under...
Trying to gather things for the outdoor experience when the new chicks make their transition.
Has anyone tried to coopworx caterers and feeders? They are super expensive, but seem sturdy and built to last.
Also, I plan on putting food and water in the run, not the coop. Is that correct?
I’ve had the new babies since Wednesday. I’m a proud new chicken mom, so of course I need to post more pictures 😂
This is Day 3 and we have some feathers!
It’s messy, yes. But I cleaned right after I took the pictures. They’re growing so fast!
I’ve had a couple pasty butts, but came right off...
I received my chicks just Wednesday and when we first got home, I was a little worried about one. She was stumbling around, though active. But she just didn’t seem as steady as the others. Once she got some water with electrolytes and some food, and some heat, she perked up and was doing much...
Hi again! Quick question…do my new babies need grit yet? They’re only 2 days old. I haven’t put any down because I read somewhere they should be older. Am I on the right track?
I ran to the post office the minute they called! They chirped all the way home and have settled in nicely. Showed them how to get a drink and everyone was right. One got it and the rest followed! I have mixed up the electrolytes and they seem to love it!
We got a little messy with the food, but...
I’m reading different things about training the chicks to drink from a nipple waterer. Is this a thing?? And how do I do it? I’m getting day old chicks next week and I’ve also read they’ll need water immediately from the stress of the trip! How do I teach these tiny babies how to get their water?
Ok, y’all!! My first flock of 6 chicks should be here next week!! I’m nervous, but trying to be as ready as possible!
I have the pop up brooder, the heat playe, watered and feeder and little perches. Bedding material and a scoop for cleaning. I have starter crumbles and grit for their dining...
I have a plethora of pine trees that shed their straw and we blow it into piles. I use it in my dog kennel and landscaping. Would it be ok in the coop?
Quick question…I’m new to all this and I’m just trying to be prepared. I plan on putting the chicks to bed at dusk, but I leave for work around 6am. And sometimes it’s still dark outside. Can I open the coop then? I don’t want to confuse them 😊
Hi,all! I just ordered my very first batch of chickens from Meyer Hatchery! They are schedule to hatch 10/15 and to arrive soon after.
I decided to start with 2 Green Queens, 2 Wyandottes and 2 Cream Legbars.
Information out there can be overwhelming, so I am grateful to have found this forum...
