    Face protection when cleaning

Do any of you wear protection when cleaning? I wear regular glasses but just hold breathe if I sift thru the sand/sawdust and coop is outside so plenty of ventilation. I could wear a regular paper/medical face mask but seeing if there's other options in gear or just cleaning procedure.

Is it easier to join two coveys that already live side by side?

Or in my case - one on top of the other. I have two mixed coveys of 4hens x 1roo and want to join them to dedicate one floor to tuxedos. I've heard of the put up a divider /see but can't touch method, anyone done this with coveys that already live so close together? Also, joining the...

    Pre-fab house made of cedar

I'm looking for something that can be used: as an outside brooder temporarily, since garage is too hot a place to separate a broody mom and her chicks a small run to give the covey some fun pecking the yard every now and then I like the below because it fits all these (bottom tray and wheels...

    Broody Hen

I noticed one of my hens stays in the cubby side of the quail hotel, where all the ladies lay the eggs and I usually scare her off to collect eggs. I've never had poultry before so I didn't put 2+2 together until yesterday. I checked and sure enough, she'd gathered 3 of the eggs and was sitting...

    Convert to deep litter?

When this house was made, they originally made it too tall, so I asked them to add a divider and that way I could have 2 levels for quails. I solved the flooring problem by creating a sort of lifted wire floor that I drop wood pellet sawdust into. It works ok, I often just wipe and trash the...

    Bedding: Pellet vs Sand

I had pine shavings on the cubby side of my quail hotel but decided to put in sand since they love it so much. It's going great but I also noticed they do well on the wood pellet (powder) and bathe in it as well. I'm thinking it's more absorbent than the sand? Would there be drawbacks to...

To commemorate the start of my journey...

I've started my backyard adventures with quail. I got my first covey in February and kept a couple keepsakes until I had the time to build a little memory box. I completed it today and will be hanging it up in the kitchen!

I have an orange roo.. that was beating up on another roo (below). I would like my covey to be reds/whites/ambers. I currently have 3 Italian, 1 Pearl and 1 red/white hen. There is one problem with the roo below, though his vent is small and looks similar to the other males, I have yet to...

    Quail Egg Size Differences

The left most egg is from a "pharoah" jumbo, also I believe called "wild". The middle two are from my 2nd covey, a fawn collection with pearl fees, manchurian and italian coturnix. The one on right was a first egg laid by the 2nd covey.

    Sand bowl tragedy

Just a word of warning as I lost a quail this morning. My quail have a sandbowl I regularly fill with sand, it's made of heavy plastic and one managed this morning to flip it over and get stuck under it. With the heat here (currently 96f) she passed away. So, check your sand bowls, make sure...

    Egg snacks for pups

Anyone give their dogs some quail egg snacks? I've started to give them a raw egg on top of a bit of kibble and a bit of water for a small breakfast a couple times of week. It seems like a winner!

    Quail on side, won't stand

I woke up to find one of my quail laying on side. She kicks, moves wings, but will not stand. I've separated her, the rest of them look fine, it was just her laying on her side. Anything I can do for her or will I have to unfortunately put her down? She and the covey are in a 5x1' wooden...

    Egg Diagnosis

This is my first covey and just last week, I started to see eggs. Today was the first time I saw some bad eggs laid. Is this normal (you get some bad eggs)? Am I doing something wrong? I've attached pictures of one bad egg, the other was normal color and all, just weak shell with some...

Only 2 Wks Old and Chasing Other Quail/Bully

I've seperated them for now, but my quail turned 2 weeks yesterday and there is one that has been chasing the others all day, keeping them away from the water bowl and just generally chasing. I put him in a box with pine chips, food and water for a couple hours, returned him and he went back to...
