I have one hen that lays late in the day, a few times she's laid while roosting. My concern is that she takes forever to lay her egg, sometimes hours. She's not happy about it either; grumbles, pecking the side of the nesting box, and yelling when anyone comes close to the box.
Her eggs tend...
All of my hens have rather sharp keels. This has been the case their entire lives. They are now approximately 6 and a 1/2 months.
They all have bright eyes, glossy feathers, plenty of energy, are drinking plenty of fresh water, and laying consistently They are on 16% protein layer feed and...
Does anyone hold back eggs in anticipation of decreased laying during molting?
Right now I'm getting 12 a day and have more than enough to share / give away. However, I don't want short myself during a lean time.
These are Hoover Hatchery hens. They are just a bit over 6 months old. Other than being the pickiest eaters I've ever experienced, aside from my cats, they are a breeze to deal with.
While marketed as Rhode Island Reds, from what I've read, I'm sure they would be classified as production reds...
I read 3 to 4 hens per nesting box, i have 12 hens, so I purchased 3 boxes. Now that all the hens are laying it's been a bit busy. Today turned in a full battle. Bloody combs, squabbling, and screaming.
I fed them some canned insects to calm everyone down and then sat to watch who was causing...
I feel horrible. We had a hen pass this morning. Can heat stress cause a hen to pass a day after it occured?
The tarp that covers their run had ripped on Tuesday. It just disintegrated from the sun. I ordered another one, but it isn't scheduled to arrive until Saturday.
We kept icing the...
My girls treat everything I put in their dust bath container like food. None of them show any ill effects. They are free fed on 20% chick feed. Treats are dandelion weeds, mustard greens, and the random grasshopper. They are in a 10x19 run.
I started with just yard dirt and wasn't too concerned...
If my neighbors were unaware that I have chicks, they know now.
The girls are 4 weeks old and we just put them into their new run. It's 19x10x6.5.
They went out around noon and just had a blast. Zooming, scratching, and eating like the gluttons that they are.
I set their brooder plate in a...
Yes, Another lol. I have browsed this forum and the internet and haven't quite found my answer.
All of my chicks have fecal matter with no apparent urates. Is this a concern?
No one has pasty butt and no inflamed vents. No one strains to pass the feces. The consistency is solid, but not hard...
My Ladies just went from palace to poor house.
I had an unexpected vet bill of a little over 4k. The run budget was sacrificed to help pay for it.
The short term solution is an Amazon prefab19x10x6.5 dome roof. We have block walls on 3 sides and a new wood fence along the back. Predators are...
My original brooder plate arrived today, it's a 16"x24". I lost a chick overnight and I'm pretty sure it's my fault. I had to order a brooder plate to make due with until the original arrived. I went with one that said it was for 20 chicks. It was not. She was in the middle and was crushed. I...
My girls arrived on Tuesday and were provided both electrolyte water and plain water. They devoured the electrolyte water and barely touched the plain. I Took the electrolyte water away last night before I put them to bed.
I just checked on them and they are energetic and happy. My concern is...
My Husband and I have been contemplating getting chickens for a while now. We're extremely limited for space, less than 1/4 of an acre. I've had chickens before but it was ages ago and they were free range on anywhere from 20 to 100 acres.
I settled on Rhode Island Reds, since I am most...
