A week or so ago I moved a couple hens. I noticed the one had blood on its throat. As if being slit. I figured she must have somehow cut it on perhaps the box inside their hutch (papercut), or against the wood doorway. But she healed quick enough in the other hutch.
Today I see a hen with a...
This has happened enough times that I am wondering what is going on.
I click on the forum, or go to another page within the forum, and the small icon in the tab (Chrome, Win 10, PC) keeps right on spinning. As if the page is still trying to load something. And clicking on the X for it to stop...
I don't recall any small eggs. And these were all about the same size at one point.
But everyone seems to be growing right along except for this little hen.
Do you think she's just a late bloomer? Or is a runt always a runt?
(sorry for the blur. she likes to scurry around)
ETA: It became...
Do you process a quail in front of the others?
I cannot handle my birds. They, especially the roos, avoid me. Running from one side of the hutch to the other when I open the door.
I can see me getting them out of the hutch one at a time using a net, but I cannot see me putting them in a bucket...
I thought quail eggs were supposed to be like chicken eggs.
But what I am noticing is there does not seem like the same amount of yolk.
I think I am taking into account the size difference. But compared to a chicken egg, where you can break the yolk on a SSU egg and it runs all over, I'm...
As I mentioned in another thread, the bag of gamebird crumbles I thought I had is pellets.
What do you think of this?
It seems all there for adult birds.

I have a couple different models of chick feeders with the upside down jar on top and the round base with holes in it on the bottom.
Is there a trick to refilling it when there is still food left in the base?
Even when using it for the first time, or with no food in the base, once you screw...
I'd like to use the small red watering cups I've seen on YT for the "cat condos" I'm going to modify. This would give them more floor space. I'll probably do something with the food, too.
I thought the waterers were all the same. The beak pushes on a valve and the cup gets water in it. But I am...
I'm trying to plan ahead and this seems like a quick option, but I can't find one set up and it doesn't say how big the mesh is on the flooring. I was wondering what I might have to do to adapt it to quail.

I get sun in the summer and snow in the winter.
I'm guessing I can keep the food and water in the open side of my hutch year round. The side with hardware cloth everywhere but the roof. Unless something happens where I get snow accumulation in the open side... in which case I can staple some...
I picked up some Purina Gamebird starter crumbles for my quail chicks.
Looking ahead, I wanted to get another bag but it seems the local TSC is having a hard time getting stuff in. Including another small trough waterer, because I'd like to have another one.
So I'm looking for a simple...
So it seems that given enough water a quail chick will drown itself in it.
What about adult birds and a pan of water? Do they know enough to stay out of it in cold weather?
I recently watched a video on keeping chickens in winter. And it made a lot of sense. The youtuber said the best thing he...
I didn't want to screw up again and post a quail question here when there's a specific subforum under the chicken forum dealing with the subject matter. Just more chicken related. But I am getting zero input over there and hardly any looks.
If anyone has used this type feeder, I'd really...
I bought some of those elbows off Etsy for my Jumbo Coturnix when they get bigger.
The idea is you use a plastic container and put these in the side so when the quail shakes his head after he gets a mouthful, it does not waste as much food.
My question is; I ordered 1-1/2", but the actual size...
It was suggested I also post this here.
Which makes more sense.
I'm not exactly sure why you set a day for the incubation period.
So for quail I set the incubator for 14 days. And this is when I take the turning plate out, add more humidity and all that. Also unplug the turner.
But the...

So for quail I set the incubator for 14 days. And this is when I take the turning plate out, add more humidity and all that. Also unplug the turner.
But the incubator keeps running, right? Does it "do anything" on day 14? Or is...
Now that I've got a little information under my belt and have become dangerous ;)
And rather that posting a new thread for each event, or milestone, or sad day... whatever may happen...
I am starting a thread on my journey into quail. From A to Z so to speak.
With some commentary thrown in. Cuz...
I'm in NW PA. Close to OH, close to NY.
Like the title says... any sources nearby? I stopped at the local co-op hoping to find a note on the bulletin board and when I mentioned to a couple guys what I was looking for I got looks as if I was talking about inventing a free fuel source. "What do...
