I’ve been thinking about raising a few more quail to get my egg production up a little bit.Once new birds are old enough to go in with the current birds, should I make a divider in their enclosure and let them get used to each other then after a few days remove the divider? I know how...
last Tuesday I got my first egg and today my other hen joined in the fun of laying her first egg. I actually got one of the hens laying on video as I have a camera inside their hutch to monitor food and water as well as them during the day when I’m away. Anyways….. both hens laid an egg within 2...
So recently I picked up some crushed oyster shells for my birds. Some of the pieces are too large and they don’t even attempt to eat them. I have tried breaking up the larger pieces with hammer and it does work but I never imagined they were that hard. Would a mortar and pestle but a good idea...
My quail are 7 weeks old this Saturday and I have read expect eggs between 6-10 weeks. They are still on their 28% protein starter grower feed. I plan on switching feed in a couple weeks to their adult feed. I’m not sure if the feed has anything to do with it. Right now I’m getting 12hr and 45...
I am about to switch my birds over to a 17-20% protein layer crumble and I’m doing my research on what would work. Calcium always seems to be low on the ingredient list on the bags I have seen at my local stores. The average is 1.75% that I see. I know I can mix in crushed oyster shells if I...
Early this morning I caught a raccoon on my home security cameras headed towards my quail hutch. Thankfully it’s locked down tight with 1/2” hardware cloth over all the wire and has solid wood on top bottom and all the three sides. I also have spring loaded clips on all latches because I know...
My little covey of quail will be 4 weeks old this Saturday. They no longer require the heating plate and our temps here in Texas have started to warm up. We’ve had days that have hit 90 already. It’s getting in the high 50’s at night / early morning right now. Towards the end of next week it...
My birds are 24 days old. I think I have 3 females and a male but the golden Italian has a lot of speckles on its chest with red. I also took a photo of it back so you can see the red there too. The little one that’s just a very dark color I am not sure if it’s male or female. I think by the...
So I’m getting ready to move my quail chicks into their permanent home in a few weeks and I’m coming up with plans to build a watering system that allows me to fill it from the outside. If you use something that holds 2-5 gallons, should you add a drop of bleach to the water to make sure no...
So I have 4 coturnix quail that are 15 days old. Three are 2/3’s of the way feathered and can already jump up 20” or so and actually flutter there. One of them is about half their size and can maybe jump 8-10”. It is eating the same food getting plenty of water and overall is very active and...
What are you favorite ways to cook eggs? I’m in the process of raising my little covey of quail and soon I’ll have more eggs than I can eat! I’m looking for creative egg dishes so I / we don’t get tired of the same ones over and over. I’ll start with my go to’s.
Scrambled
Sunny side up
Fried...
I’m feeding the ranch pro game bird starter from Atwoods. It is 28% protein. My 12 day old chicks love it. When they get old enough to start laying eggs, should I stick with this high protein feed and add in bits of egg shells or should I get some of the layer crumble and mix in with this feed?
So if your like me and don’t like your chicks pooping on your heating plate then you have probably looked into ways to keep them off. I use the eggluulz 10x10 inch heating plate. So I began looking at anti-roost cones. You can spend anywhere from 17-40$ easily on one of those. So one day I was...
When my birds are finally not babies anymore I’d love to give them some treats every now and then. I love to spoil my animals! I have read that the small meal worms are good to give them sparingly. Can coturnix have things like fruit, bread crumbs, cracked corn etc? I plan to keep them on the...
So I have had my quail 5 days and I have kept a light on above them the entire time. They definitely know where their food and water is now. Is there a certain amount of time I need to keep a constant light source? I’ve read many conflicting opinions on the matter. Right now I have a camera...
Good morning! I have one coturnix chick that is a very blonde / gold color. All the others are your standard brownish reddish color. It also is the biggest by far. I’d say a 1/3 of the others size bigger. The chicks are 7 days old today. Amazing how fast they are growing. Thanks!
Howdy folks, I just brought home my little covey of 5 coturnix quail. I’ve been researching them for a while and decided that I wanted to try to raise them for eggs. Every time I have researched a question about them I end up on this site so I figured it’s a good place to be. Glad to be here!
