I'm not at all handy, but thought that a PVC hoop coop was simple enough that I could pull it off. The plan was: a 10ft by 20 ft enclosure made of a tunnel of pvc arches, draped over entirely with hardware cloth, with a door in one of the ends of the tunnel. Because of the lay of the land, the...
I'm curious if places like Cackle, Ideal, Mt. Healthy, Meyer, Hoover, are more or less the same when it comes to reliability of sexing, or if some stand out as being better or worse?
Our coop is set up in a heavily treed area where we have a ton of leaves that we mulch down. Would that work as well as pine shavings for a coop floor, if I sprinkled some sweet pdz underneath? It sure would be economical (and the space is 10x20 feet, so it would make a big difference cost wise...
We are new to chickens and I am grateful for all of you and your experience. If, after ensuring there's a ton of space, enrichment, clean food (20% protein), clean water, no pests, etc, you keep seeing the same chick (5 weeks old) plucking at others' feathers, do you cull?
This seemed to happen almost overnight. I'm not seeing any bullying at all while I'm with them, and we've been observing closely. One of the affected chicks is one of the more dominant personalities in the bunch, and the other is one of the quieter, shy ones. They're getting a 20% protein feed...
My chicks are in a brooder in my house (building the coop as fast as I can!) The dust is horrendous, even with a strong air filter running. Can I vacuum the area around them or will the loud noise harm them (are there neurological effects from such loud noise for them)?
We just had our first heartbreak of parting with a cockerel we were all attached to, and I'm anxious about remaining cockerels in our sexed pullets. Some of them are EEs, and after going through the many threads on sexing EEs, I'm still not clear on what information the comb gives in this...
My 4 week old chicks have had mushy and sometimes watery stools for the past week. They are inside the house in a brooder, but I have brought them dirt to play with, and sticks from outside. It hasn't worsened over the past week (or more?) but it hasn't gotten super firm either. They're getting...
We have a bright, active 4 week old Easter Egger who was supposed to be a sexed pullet, but is shaping up to be a cockerel. We are not allowed to keep roosters so we are hoping to rehome him.
Was supposed to be a sexed pullet but turned out to be a cockerel and we are not allowed to have roosters. Extremely gentle with my children and myself.
I'm learning so much from you all. Is this the kind of colouring that counts as red/rust spots, and are they in the right place? (4wk old EE for reference, and threw in a pick of the comb for good measure!)
These are allegedly sexed EE pullets, but we've already found multiple cockerels in our flock from this hatchery so I'm not sure. I realize we're still a ways out from being able to tell, but are there any early cues here?
