Eye changes after respiratory infection--runny eyes/ minor pus noticed on one side. Is this Ocular Marek's?

I will have to dig through my photos but not sure if I have any early photos of Lavender's eyes. There was some sneeziness going through the flock, and since I had had some coughing I had treated with Tylan/Dox 5-6 weeks before I kept putting off antibiotics because I had to cull some meat...

Hemp bedding-- cheaper options than My Favorite Chicken brand that are still good

So I like the chickenlandia podcast and YouTube channel and the host does say, get what you can afford. However she has said her favorite brand (supposedly used before they started sponsoring her) is My Favorite Chicken and that it can be used for 2x as long as pine shavings before having to be...

What are some photos you return to again and again of your flock that makes you laugh or puts you in a good mood?

I have a better picture of Lovey-Dovey (the last photo trying to squeeze her fat butt between two chickens who got to that spot before she did) because she is the queen of open mouth, 45* angled derp face. But the other ones always make me feel happy, or exasperated-amused.

Plucking ducks was bad, decided to just skin and save fat. Would rendering fat with feathers make the fat taste gross?

I plucked 4 drakes by hand and I did a pretty decent job. Due to time, it got salt brined before I had a chance to wax. Waxing did help but there was still a lot left. I had a 2 year old Muscovy that also must have had some Yeti in the family tree because I'm not sure how anyone could have hand...

About to cull and some have got sniffles. Meat still safe, or skip straight to antibiotics and withdrawal period?

Maybe a month or so ago I had some sick birds so the whole flock got Tylosan. Last week I had two isolated for coughing and sneezing but now I have some that were to be culled this week sneezing. All eating and drinking well, running around. I have delayed starting antibiotics because I was...

Mystery likely pure-bred. Help identifying breed of 3month old

Birthday June 8th (so almost 3 months old.) Came from a mixed group of supposedly pure bred eggs. Other chicks that have come from that group have been a Dominic, a Buff Orp, a Lav Orp, 2 zombies, a likely imperfect Ayam Cemani (2 small spots of not black. I keep meaning to checks its tongue,)...

I've been processing cockerels and some hens and had a question about poop

Often I can cut the tail and abdomen and then scoop and pull, but there's been a couple of times where poop will squeeze out, or where once I knicked the intestine and poop touched the meat. I immediate washed the meat and no more poop came into contact with the meat, rinsed it several more...

What's the project you've been putting off? What was the last project you put off that you finally finished(ish)?

I was thinking about all the projects I have partially started that I try to make a dent in weekly (or not nearly as often.) often it's weather that gets in the way, but it's easy to get overwhelmed by the slog of projects you keep meaning to get to, start, work on, or finish. What's your's...

When you give your meat birds antibiotics, how long do you wait after medication course is done to cull meat?

I had a respiratory infection pop up in the flock right before some were going to be culled. So I just treated everyone. I did 80/20 Tylosine/dox. I have read anywhere between a week to two weeks after antibiotics but then when I went to double check I couldn't find it. Is that about what you...

I don't need anymore backyard mix eggs but this ad cracked me up so much I had to fight myself not to bid on them. I give you: Immortal Buff Hen!

Bid at your own risk, hatch if you dare... This buff hen graces me with a perfectly fertilized egg every other day that she produces with the help of her concubine roosters that she refuses to share. Who's the daddy? Who knows... could be an Ayam Cemani or a Bielefelder as those are the two that...

If you have awesome photos or stories of your birds from hatcheries and breeders, consider updating them to brighten their day

I don't 100% know that it's a frustrating job but having talked to an acquaintance who used to send birds in the mail from her farm and feed store, it was gut wrenching a couple decades ago. It's probably is a lot worse now with shipping birds, and weather issues being more prevalent. If you...

Sexing 4 Barred Hollands, 8 weeks old

Breed: Barred Holland Hatchery: Sandhill Preservation Born: May 12 (roughly 8 weeks old) Probably similar to Barred Rocks. I have looked up differences and according to @CascadiaRiver "Hollands have 6 comb points and Plymouths have 5 comb points Plymouth Rocks are assumed are mixes of...

For those who incubate duck eggs, and weigh them for weekly humidity loss checks, how strict is that 2.8% weekly guideline?

I have ten eggs (9 Muscovy, 1 Pekin) left from a pretty disastrous shipped batch where a lot had messed up air sacs. I've been tracking their weights and today was the second week weigh in. I've been following this...

How does one best find replacement prices by a certain chicken type and age? Related to police and insurance reports, livestock valuations

Referencing: https://www.backyardchickens.com/threads/chickens-attacked-killed-and-mauled-by-neighbors-dog.1670611/ However this topic comes up fairly often: Neighbor's dogs (often negligently) improperly secured crosses property lines and kills livestock on a nearby property. You can...

    Snackmeat's Nut Mix Picture Journal

I see a lot of pictures journals and so instead of posting a "look at this pretty pattern!" I figured I would start one. We are lucky because we are largely in this for meat chickens, but wanted to experience chicken meat that would be more likely to be found in other countries, or, less...

Need a duck food to recommend to someone. I keep trying to hatch their eggs and they fail between day 14-25.

At first I thought it was a humidity issue, and it likely was as I had some Cayuga eggs fail earlier that overlapped with this. But I've now had two duck eggs (blue swedish mixes) that failed at day 25 and day 14. The first one had the air bubble looking exactly how it should, according to...

What's the most obscure/least mentioned hatchery (with an online presence) you've had a positive experience with?

I can get certain breeds from locals who have ordered from well known hatcheries. I was wanting to look at most obscured or least mentioned hatcheries that still has an online presence. This way if I decide to breed, I have access to (hopefully) diverse genetics locally. I don't mind somewhat...
