    Extra calcium in winter?

Do we need to keep giving extra calcium during winter months if the girls are not laying? Their game feed has 2.5% calcium. I've been giving the girls a separate bowl of oyster shell to ensure they don't produce soft eggs. Should I stop giving the extra calcium whilst they take their winter...

Chicken feed about to get cheaper?

Hello BYC keepers. This article appeared in my feed. Cheaper chicken and eggs? Soybeans for animal feed now tax-free | Malay Mail https://share.google/LWSw1e0v2QjwPczuY Hopefully this means chickens will continue to have a nutritious diet at a lower cost to the keeper. I don't keep chickens...

    Who am I?

Hello quail-keepers. Is this falb fee a he or a she? The falb is almost 6 weeks. I think it's a boy but he hasn't crowed or behaved like the other males.

Alphabet themed quail hatch-along. Day 1

Hello lovely, knowledgeable BYCers. My son (16) has started to incubate 31 quail eggs. Please join the fun by helping name a quail or 2. He'd like to have one named after every letter of the alphabet, A-Z inclusive. This means we can have 7 letters repeated or diacriticals. Pick your letters...

Who is this handsome bird with red chest spots?

I'm 6.5 weeks old. I don't crow. I don't lay eggs. The boys chased me. Do you think I'm male or female?

    Egg song

Sandy has been laying eggs every day since Friday 15th. The eggs look like traditional cream and brown spotty eggs. Her song is not beautiful though she is very noisy before and after laying and she is incredibly high-pitched. Ear shattering!!! Will she always have this "song" or will it change...

    Teenagers

Well my boys are now eh.. maturing and are making a racket looking for girlfriends 😆. The boys are crowing and strutting about and the girls are hidden in a quiet corner. Is that the normal for hens? That they hide together to escape these randy boys? Teenagers eh 😆

    Huh? Is he normal?

Who said quail are skittish? This gorgeous boy is forever flapping onto my shoulder. He's so soft and warm 😍. He stays put for ages when he's on my shoulder. Quail are amazing birds.

    Plush Quail where to buy

Although my babies haven't been sexed yet I suspect we have a lot of male birds. I mentioned the problems that come with having too many boys with the hens to the kids but they aren't keen on culling. I shouldn't have let the kids name them, apparently it would be easier to cull unnamed birds...

    Deformed feet in incubator!!

Help me please BYC!! I'm new to quail-keeping. We're on day 17. One gorgeous little Coturnix bird hatched 12 hrs ago. The chick has clear eyes and a nice looking beak. It's feet however are very curled. I haven't been able to get a picture of the deformation but it looks bad. What do I do...

    Update on hatchlings

My babies are now just over 3 weeks. They are all mostly feathered and getting quite big. I think out of the 7, 2 are female (they both have pink beaks and spots on their chests) They tend to stuck together. The other 5 have a non patterned bib and are always exploring. I decided to...

    One week update

I'm new to quail-keeping. My family had our first hatch a week ago. Since then 6 others have hatched. We have 5 golden birds and 2 brown beauties with gold markings around their heads. I'm not very good at maths. Using chicken maths if we have 7 actual birds how many do we have using chicken...

    Why oh why?

Hello BYCers. As some of you know I joined after my first quail chick hatched last week. Since then we got a total of 7 chicks from 14 eggs. A little bit of background. I bought 8 eggs from one seller and 6 from another. Both batches were sent via the post with no delay or extreme temps along...
