Sparrows and Jays are getting into the run for free food. Any ideas how I can modify the door opening so the girls can come and go, but keep the unwelcomed birds out? Was thinking of hanging some sort of screen about a foot off the ground, with the door being part way open. What say you?
I googled the question and it said, no. My Speckled Sussex has yet to lay an egg. She's not feeling well as she looks like she is tired. She hung out in the coop part of the day and free ranging the rest of today. Wonder if she ate something that she should not have. All I can do is hope for the...
What's your plan to help cool your coop and or run this summer? I can see it now in the middle of summer with all posts about,"it's over 100 degrees, how can I cool do my coop"? Kinda like those with the winter cold. Please people, be proactive and not reactive. I'm installing this fan from...
I started letting my 4 girls out of prison on Sunday and of course they love it. This morning when I went out to check on them, all they wanted to do was to go eat grass. Seems like they are not interested in their feed. One thing that caught my attention this morning was the amount of poop in...
Wouldn't you know it, this morning my brown leghorn alerted everyone that she laid an egg. Went to check the box and what she left looked like a partial scrambled egg. There was even some yellowish stuff outside the box on the ledge for the box. She is about 6 months old, has laid a soft shell...
Yesterday late morning was the day to let them out of prison....zero issues.....but I never left them alone, as I could hear a hawk a ways away...tossed out some shelled peanuts to attract the crows.....let them out late afternoon again....may have to put up some bird netting too. Sorry about...
So far my Brown Leghorn is the only one out of 4 that is laying eggs...yesterday she cackled very loud, almost as loud as a rooster.....she was alerting me, "hey dad, I left an egg for you in one of the 4 nesting boxes". Can't wait til the other 3 start laying those $100 eggs........
I want to get one more chicken, Buff Orpington that will be a very young pullet, so I'm thinking of converting my plastic dog crate into a coop for quarantine. It'll be attached to a couple sawhorses. Looking for other suggestions on what to do or don't do. It'll be located so they can all see...
It's time to let the chickens to start some free-ranging. Was thinking about putting up some plastic fencing or netting. What would you use, netting or the snow fencing? I'm thinking the snow fence. What say you?

The reason for this question is in regards to when we have someone come over and feed the 4 girls. I have a treadle feeder and they are not using it, no biggie. I'm feeding them twice a day, because I do not have a chicken feeder. Looks like I need to get one, where all 4 girls can eat at the...
2 of my 4 hens/pullets are starting to lay their eggs. The Leghorns eggs are all fine except on the small side. This morning I found an egg under the poop shelf on the bedding with the soft shell. Not sure which one layed it. Guess it's time to get rid of the "Start and Grow", having layer feed...
Before you build a coop, what are going to do when,
1. It rains and rains and rains?
2. When the temps are over 100 degrees for days?
3. When the temps get below freezing?
4. When it snows and your tarp covered run collapses?
5. When predators keep getting in the coop/run?
I'm making Chicknic tables to sell. And I tell you what, it's a great way to make some bucks. I just started about 2 weeks ago and it's keeping me occupied. I'm also making these roosting bar perches. What would you call it?
