I have 7 hens. 4 are in the molt. I noticed they were beginning to have trouble getting up and more trouble getting down from the 6 foot high roost. Yesterday one hen came out limping badly, I assume, from a bad landing off the roost. So, I'm re-thinking my setup. Reading here I found that they...
Since the days have become shorter and the coop has become darker, my hens are having an increasingly difficult time getting up on the roost. If they wait until the last minute to go to bed, they are in there in the dark trying to find their way up to the roosts. I've been having to give them a...
I've been wondering for several days why my Araucana hasn't been giving eggs. Well, I found a clutch of 4 eggs under a bench in the yard. I want to keep them, but I'm unsure if I should. It's been rather cool last few days.
Is there a way to tell if an egg is good by cracking it open and looking?
We have 7 layers that have been laying for a couple months now.
We have had two shell-less eggs dropped from the roost over night and a few thin shelled eggs in nests.
Our local feed store was out of oyster shell so we got feed with it included.
I think we have been over doing the "treats"...
Our 18 week old Red Star is driving me nuts. She is all over apparently looking for a nesting spot. I found her this morning 50 yards outside the fence up in the woods this morning. I put her in a nesting box in the coop 3 times but she doesn't seem to like that idea.
It does get pretty hot in...
Things are drying up here in California. The greens are about gone and the fruit trees are being ravaged by birds. My chickens eat what seems to be a lot of plums that get knocked off by birds. Should I limit the fruit they can get?
it occurs to me it may not be good to let them out in the yard all day every day. They are feeding on worms, bugs and all the good things in my garden/yard area all day long. It seems like they've decided that their chick feed is not so great any more. Should I restrict them to the run for a few...
My chicks are approx. 6 weeks old and I have been giving them a fork full of wormy compost every day for a week now. They go nuts over the worms and have a great time scratching in the compost. Is there any reason to limit their worm intake at this stage?
