Need some input! I've got six new six week old chicks (now 7 weeks) that I introduced to my flock of 8 older chickens (between 2-3 Yrs old) last week. Done this several times in the past, and these behaved similarly, stayed to themselves, got harassed away from the feeder when the others want to...
So, I got six new chicks the last day of February after the fox was kind enough to leave me two of my twelve in the fall... I've kept them indoors in the stock tank and they have been doing great.
A week ago before a family party, my nephew calls and asks, if he gets some chickens for his kids...
My hens are all about 2.5 years old, I made the mistake of thinking they lay for 2.5 years from the time they START laying, but have found that they stop around when they are 2.5 years old, so my egg income for my twelve hens has gone from about ten a day over the summer to two to four eggs per...
So I'm still relatively new to back yard chickens, i'm BRAND new to having a rooster, and hatching chicks. So here's my question:
I have a chicken that 'disappeared' while we were on vacation. the person letting them in and out in the evening and morning, noticed on the first day she was here...
So I've got a broody chicken with an interesting disappearing act... We had someone letting the chickens in and out last week while on vacation, and she said one of the chickens went missing on Tuesday. Today, it showed back up again. I later saw it had gotten over the inner fence (keeping the...
I've got a chicken that is sneezing fairly regularly. At first it seemed only to be while eating, and I know some of them will occasionally 'squeek' when they eat from the dust, but this doesn't appear to be that. This one is sneezing even when not eating now and more consistently. Any...
Fox got in and killed my other duck, and now I've got one that needs a friend, and the chickens can't swim! If anybody has a female duck (or two) in the area, please let me know. Thanks!
Mick
Hey All,
I live in Chester County Pa, and had two ducks that I got as ducklings just before Easter.
Well, the fox got in and killed one of them, and now the other is very lonely. I have four other chickens that she hangs out with, but nobody to go in the pond with.
Anybody know the best way...
So I ended up getting a new batch of chicks after the spring fox got all of my last flock! When the feed store had its chicks it also gets ducks, so my wife and I had to have the 'I want ducks' conversation... of course she asked 'what if they are loud or messy??' to which I of course replied...
I've got 5 one year old chickens, and three two month old chicks that I want to take from the garage and move out to the yard with the others. I've put them out for day's a couple occasions, just to get them used to it. They tend to stay behind the AC condenser, and go out only for little runs...
First time I saw this, I had no idea what was going on, but it appears that one of my chickens has the habit while roosting, of turning her head almost 180° and then tucking it into the feathers on her shoulder. Anybody ever seen this?
The photo is through the window and the screen, so it's not...
Never seen this one before:
Are they trying to nest in the dirt? They were kind of stirring it up, rolling around and throwing dirt on themselves and through their feathers.
Any idea what they're doing??
So six of my first batch of eight survived and are out in the coop that I inherited from my nephew's late flock. I saw an article recommending sand for the coop floor, which is working really well. I can clean the poop up easily with a cat litter scooper, and they can scratch to their hearts...
So my two day old chicks are doing well, but I noticed one of them has a hard crusty wad of poop right on her butt. I tried to get rid of it gently, but it is caught in her little fuzzy butt feathers, so it was hurting her as I was trying to remove it. Not sure if this is gong to block her up or...
I was told that I can use a 100w bulb for heat with my brand new chicks (that arrived early) seeing that it should be 90°, but as I'm rushing through my 'dummies' book, I see that they should have 10 hours of dark and 14 of light. So I'm not to sure what to do about the light I'm using to heat...
I'm considering my options for buying some chicks for the purpose of egg laying and secondarily for meat.
What we'd like is chickens that will lay eggs with some regularity to supply us with eggs and a little surplus for friends etc. We'd like brown eggs, but that's not critical.
My thought...
