So sorry to hear about your girl! I recently lost a few too. Non-chicken owners get surprised at how attached we get to our birds, but they are special. Quite honestly, I am surprised at myself at how attached I have gotten to my girls. (First time chicken owner.)Losing them is not an easy...
I had a pecking problem recently too. I had to seperate out one of my hens because she was being pecked at and they were pulling her feathers and making her bleed. I put her into a pet carrier so she could heal and kept her in the coop with the others so they would stay familiar wtih each...
SeaChick-
I would bury your fence at least 6" or 8" deep. I know the guys around here who raise pheasants for sport and have large outdoor pens dig a trench and bury metal panels around the outside of their pens. Our pen is contructed of chainlink fence and we covered the top with bird...
Hi Everyone-
I haven't posted in a few weeks again, but I check in on all of you and appreciate everything you share. I'm posting tonight because I wouldn't have believed what happen if I didn't see it with my own eyes...
This morning I went out to check on my chickens (21 females, 2 roosters...
You are so brave to keep ordering chicks! I am so twitter pated about the 23 I bought 6 weeks ago - still trying to figure out the best way to care for them, get things set up properly, trying to figure out why they do the things they do!... I can't imagine cycling through a new bunch every few...
Oaknim, we farm in north central KS, about 90 minutes north of Salina.
I was in town for a few hours this afternoon and when I got back, they had really done a number on poor little Pearl again. They continue to pull feathers and she is bleeding again. It's not just her bottom they are after...
Chickbea! I am so excited! Your comment re: sending newbies (like me) to the search button made me think, "Search button?!?! There's a search button?!? NICE!" (Sometimes the obvious eludes me.) I noticed that in other threads some members had referred to previous discussions and were able...
Oaknim, I live in KS too - a transplant from WI. Fell in love with a KS grain farmer and now look at me! I've integrated livestock into the operation!
Anyway, I thought about the vaseline thing too. I think I will give her a little more time. I checked on them about 5 minutes ago and...
Hello-
I have a flock of 23 - 6 weeks old. 21 pullets, 2 roosters - a mixed variety. I posted yesterday that everyone is doing pretty well other than one light colored Americauna that I had to seperate into a pet carrier because the rest were pecking at her bottom. She's been in there for a...
Hi! Thanks for sharing some pics of your babies! I am a new chicken hobbiest and find all kinds of great info on this forum. Hope you do too!

Hi BYC!
I am a new chicken enthusiast. I posted a few times when I first got my 24 chicks in March. I was so afraid I was going to do something totally catostrophic and that the poor little things wouldn't survive my ignorance! All of you were very supportive and generous with your knowledge...
I noticed last week that her middle toe was curved. I also noticed in the past few days that it seems to have gotten worse, but today it is at a 90 degree angle! (She's about 1.5 weeks old) It is not bleeding and she doesn't pick at it - and neither do the others. She is favoring it, however...
Shandea-
I admire you for being so candid!
I was talking with my husband last night and said, "What was I thinking?!?! I could have gotten 6 birds and instead ended up with 23! I'm in over my head!"
He, of course, was very supportive. "You got 'em now! Better learn to deal with it!"
I just...
Every time I hang put with my chicks, I walk away a little more intrigued...
I noticed a few that "wipe their nose" on the ground? Kind of a side to side motion.
Normal or abnormal?
Thanks!

Would a little steamed or boiled rice be recommended to address the diarrhea issue?
I've heard of people offering it as a treat.
Thanks!

Hi Firefly-
Your chicks are very cute! I have a few RR's too along with a variety of others. 23 all together. About a week old now. I have a similar situation - everybody looks good - active and eating, but with some loose droppings. From the info that I have gathered, it seems like...

Among my 23 chicks, it took a few days to get through one egg. They will eat as much as you offer, but I didn't want to over do it! I just offer them a little treat once a day. I make them take it from my hand so they get used to me. Maybe I need to try some meal worms or something...
