    Norwegian Jaerhon

Very intriguing! Would love to know how your birds have turned out. Have they remained calm and laid back? I'm also wondering about the size of their combs (I live in VT where frostbite can be a problem). Do you think they would fit in with a backyard flock of mixed heavy (and docile) breeds?

    Healthy Snack

For all of those chickens that turn their beaks from shredded carrots, I have found the trick: mix some flower or cornmeal in with the carrots and your chickies will devour the healthy snack with a vengeance.

Help Please! I can't decide on Rooster. (pics)

I don't know anything about the breed, but Yogi sure looks stately with his tail. At that age the boys are still growing and it is very likely that the tails and combs of the others will follow suit. If you are not in a rush, I would wait and see who turns out nicest. Some roosters take a...

When is it too cold for a chicken?

It is supposed to get real cold the next few nights (down to 0 degrees). My 7 girls and 1 roo are in an insulated and draft free coop and have done very well so far. We have had nights in the lower teens and they did fine, but I have been wondering how much cold they can take.

EEs 25 weeks and no eggs yet...

Luckitri, I loved your Henrietta story! My EE Henrietta (my avatar) is still not giving me eggs. She is going on 27 weeks now. Her EE sibling Cap'n Silver has been laying - about every 2nd or third day. Not exactly a topnotch producer, but I cherish these greenish eggs! Does anybody know what...

EEs 25 weeks and no eggs yet...

I feel for you all! Sorry, I have to be bragging, but I had a 6-egg day! All six laying girls laid an egg today. Among them was Cap'n Silver's 2nd greenish egg. She laid her first egg yesterday. Her name is odd, I know, but at the time I named them all I thought she might be a boy. Despite her...

Any tricks for algae in the waterer?

I don't think the green algae poses a thread to the birds. The easiest way to get rid is scrubbing with a brush or sponge. My rule of thumb: when my waterer turns green it is time to clean!

    Chickens in Gardens

Payden, from my limited experience (first flock of chickens since May of this year) I can tell you that chickens don't take much to slugs and snails. Ducks on the other hand gobble them up like candy. Chickens can be very destructive to your garden with their scratching, dustbathing and...

How much does a chickie eat?

Home on the Stead, I saw the chickies on your blog. Looks like you are raising a mixed flock as well. Would love to see what yours will eat during the time in question. Keep me posted.

    Welsumer

Tailfeathers, I'm in Vermont, Middlebury area. I'm looking for hatchlings (not now, next spring). I'm really looking for sexed hatchlings as I don't want roosters (have one already, it is hard to rehome roos, and I don't have the guts to make soup out of them...get too attached... and so on). I...
