    1 month old chicks

I leave food and water inside the chicken house at night for young chicks. Especially since they aren’t really getting up on a roost yet but sleep bunched together on the floor. Once they start sleeping on a roosting bar, food will be put away at night.

Poor hen has most of her feathers pecked!

Will your hens eat out of your hands, or at least come up to you if you have treats? That's the easiest way I've found to catch one.

What kind of shoes do you wear out to the chickens?

Rubber boots. They stay on the patio right outside the back door. I do not wear them in the house. I put them on when I step out.

Worried about how they get down from their perch

Mine do the same thing. Fly out the door each morning. They have the option of two ladders to get down and choose not to. Some are already awake and on the floor of the coop eating, however most are still on the roosts and just fly out when I open the door.

Does anyone not deep litter method???

Trying it this year for the first time and I already don't like it. It's nasty. Gave the coop an entire thorough cleaning back in October to get ready for winter. We use straw and rake it around turning it daily. It just is not drying out well enough during the day and it really stinks. The...

    dead hen :(

I had one chicken just die recently. No signs of injury or trauma. No blood or wounds. She hadn't been acting sick. Just found her laying dead in the coop. It's like she just fell over dead. I buried her. This was about 3 or 4 weeks ago. All of the other chickens are fine. I still have no idea...

Feather loss/red around the vent, pics posted

A few of mine are having this problem too. Out of 22 hens, 2 have feather-less butts right now. No redness, just no feathers. My mom and I dusted them with garden and poultry dust in case it was mites. They shouldn't be molting, they were born April 2011 and I thought they didn't molt their...

Is there a correct way to clean eggs that you are going to eat/sell?

I do rinse mine in warm water if they have any poop or stains/smears on them. People do not want to buy poopy or stained eggs.

Why are my chickens eating feathers?

Mine eat feathers they find on the ground, but I've never seem them actually pluch each other. From what I've read, it's a fairly typical behavior.

I just heard the "egg song" for the first time today!!

I think the phrase "egg song" is pretty funny. It sure doesn't sound much like a song to me. More like an egg tantrum or egg announcement, lol.

    Lesson learned never again!

Yep. They are messy little boogers. They play in the water and get everything soaking wet, which contributes to the smell. I know our chicken coop and yard would be much more neat and clean without the ducks, but they're sorta worth it, lol.

Anybody else having sticker shock on coffee?

It isn't just coffee. The price of absolutely everything keeps going up, and packages keep getting smaller. I dread going to the grocery store.
