4 year old Spitzhauben roosters toenail is rotting off-what do I do to help him

I noticed my rooster, Loubert, limping a day or so ago. I checked both feet, which of course had a thin layer of mud and dirt. Checking further I noticed a small cut on his left foot and some smeared blood. Not a lot of blood, my initial thought was he cut open a hen with his spur. I checked...

Bumblefoot surgery - with pics and "how to"

I just read your post and I'm not 100% positive that the neosporin and Epsom salt won't hurt your big guy. But I really don't think it will as it seems like the feet of chickens and turkeys are pretty similar. I have approx 70 chickens and just incubated 6 turkeys, 4 domesticated and 2 wild...

Bumblefoot surgery - with pics and "how to"

After reading this thread, I found three hens with bumblefoot. I did the best I could to following the directions as posting in this thread. But Once I clean/soaked and removed the scab, I never had any plugs, cottage cheese or large holes. One hen had two on each foot and the other two had...

    Cochin rooster attacked

This is Alfonzo prior to his being attacked. Yes he is in our house and is on our cat Raney's tree. LOL This is Alfonzo a couple of days after he was attacked. I cannot believe how bad he was, i honestly thought he wasn't going to survive. Here he is with one of his ladies, Velma...

    Hens pecking feathers

I do the exact same thing! In the spring, summer and fall my chickens get to free range for the most part and in the winter they are limited to their coop and pen. I was told when this first happened that (just like you said) they might be over crowded so my son and I enlarged their pen by 4...

    Hens pecking feathers

I have tried everything you mentioned, except for the cabbage. I will most definitely be getting a few heads of cabbage today and see if that helps. Thank you!! I have used blu kote, pine tar, vaseline, iodine and the little fabric "jackets". All to no avail... I give all my chickens fancy...

Bumblefoot surgery - with pics and "how to"

Wow, I cannot believe my luck...just yesterday my son noticed that one of our Spitzhauben's (Lola) had a small bump on her foot. I examined the little bump (but I didn't check the bottom of her foot) because I had no idea what I was looking at. After reading this thread, I will be checking the...

    Hens pecking feathers

I have had the same prpoblem with my hens. It started last winter, we had an unusually hard winter, and I wasn't letting them out as much to free range. Everything I found said that they might have been bored and that started the feather pecking. Then they developed the "taste" and have...

    Cochin rooster attacked

Thank you all for your kind words! I have to tell you, I never, in my wildest dreams thought I would ever have chickens, much less, love them so much! I think chickens should be up there with dogs as being man (and woman's) best friend! I will go sit in their pen with them when I'm not having...

    Cochin rooster attacked

It was either a raccoon or a ferril cat that I have seen around our property a few times. We put a trap out and caught a couple of raccoons but I don't know 100% that it was either of them that attacked him.

    Cochin rooster attacked

I just want to share with everyone what happend to my little Cochin Rooster, Alfonzo. Approximately five weeks ago, my family and I went out of town and I had a friends 17 year old son come to my house and take care of all my animals. I have two dogs, a cat, a bearded dragon and 38 chickens...
