When we got our little chickens, they were already about three and fours months old ... among them was what the previous owner told us was this little 'turken' ... well, she's actually a 'Showgirl' a cross between a Silkie and a Turken ... and she's adorable ... has a great personality. At first...

    Sour crop

She did not look like she had lost any weight ... in fact, except for the 'sour crop' or crop binding, she looked actually healthy (well, except for the distended balloon crop). And ... I did not feel a mass in there, but I could feel the gravel bits, so I was as gentle as I could possibly be...

    Sour crop

I have a 'sour crop' situation right now with my 10 month old bantam, Miss Daisy. Two days ago I noticed this girl wasn't running around, but since she was semi-dusting, I kind of blew it off. Then yesterday I was changing food and water and she walked slowly over to the dish but didn't drink...

Silkie Hen has blackish crusty jowl folds on both sides of her face. I am not sure what the problem

Thank you, all good suggestions ... I'll try all of the above and see if I can figure this out! I'll post an update on this situation as it progresses.

Silkie Hen has blackish crusty jowl folds on both sides of her face. I am not sure what the problem

My white Silkie has 'crusty' jowl folds on either side of her face. Normally this silkie has blue jowl folds, but these are blackish grainy and crusty. They do not look like they are oozing or bloody, but they definitely look black and crusty, more like scabs. Other than crusty 'jowls' she seems...

Egg Bound, Prolapse - what more can i do??HELP

Oh my. With that much hanging out, that was definitely too large of a problem. I do believe that you made the correct choice because above and beyond all things, we all want our birds not to suffer! I'm truly sorry you had to put her down. I hope the rest of your chickens will be fine. From what...

Egg Bound, Prolapse - what more can i do??HELP

And you -definitely- need to absolutely keep her separated from the others ... chickens are after all things red ... and they will peck her until the innards are pulled out and she dies ... it's just what they do!!! Be prepared to have her separated from them for at least a month if the need be...

Egg Bound, Prolapse - what more can i do??HELP

I don't know what to say ... I am dealing with a Turken who has a prolapsed oviduct too. I have not called the avian vet yet ... I first spotted a fairly large mass protruding from her vent two days ago along with the sub-vent feathers covered with a lot of white gooey mess (it's not worms by...

This is Bob in the picture above (now 2 1/2 months old) ... I just realized that Bob and his (almost) twin brother Zander are both pictured with their mother and with one of their sisters in my Avatar ... that was when they were one day old. Today, all 9 birdies of the clutch are beautiful...

    Ants in coop

We started to use the food grade diatomaceous earth in our coops and around the perimeter and the fire ants are now far and few between. It has turned out to be a fantastic resource for us ... and it's non-chemical! We do not like those horrible ant poisons (or any other chemical poison) and...

That's her in the picture and those are some of the babies.

Broody Hen hatched eggs .... and then fainted (?????)

I was sondering that too ... maybe she was woozy from sitting for so long during that hatching phase ... it took three days for all the eggs to hatch. During that time she wasn't very interested in food or water or anything ... she was just concentrating on the chicks.

Broody Hen hatched eggs .... and then fainted (?????)

Another note: We live in south central Florida ... so the weather has been pretty nice ... it's just this week that it's cool.

Broody Hen hatched eggs .... and then fainted (?????)

We're fairly new to having chickens - have had our flock since last July and so far everything has gone well and all our birds are healthy and happy ... so we decided to let one of the birds brood some eggs and see if it'd work. We have a Silkie (normal size) who has brooded 11 eggs (none of...
