3 RIR hen bloody vent and eggs

RIR Hens age 8 months, bloody eggs and vents. One died yesterday because the other birds ate it. One is recovering from same fate and I found 1 bloody egg today. I was able to get that hen out before the others started eating her. Other than blood, her vent looks normal. All had cooci at 1...

    RIR bloody Rear and Eggs

8 months old Rhode Island Red hens. I lost one yesterday with a bloody butt that the other birds ate into. I also have another with same problem in the ICU on tetracycline. Now, this morning I found 1 bloody egg and was able to find the hen with the bloody butt before her friends ate her. I...

    jersey giants

The roosters are not gamey and not much fat on these guys. 10 months is good for eating. When I roast mine whole & stuffed, I wrap the drumsticks with bacon. After an hour or so I wrap the legs with foil and lay some foil on the breast as well. This keeps the legs and breast from drying out...

    bare back hens

2 Jersey Giant hens and 3 Silver Wyandott hens, in separate houses, can't keep feathers on their backs. This has been on-going for months. There seems to be no other problems, and none of the other birds have been affected. What do you think causes this? Thanks Steve

    jersey giants

OK, my post disappeared so lets try again. At 8 months dress they out over 10 pounds. Yummy, including roosters. Big enough to scare off predators and dogs. Out of 20 chicks, 18 survived to maturity. Highly recommend.

Offer of Jersey Giant Roo to go with DP hens. Good idea??

We raised 20 Jersey Giants this year. Very good survival rate with 18 to maturity and no meds. They love to forage so we let them out in the day and back in the chicken house and run at night. We had a lot of predator problems with other breeds but not the JG. They are good eaters and taste...

SNAKE IN COOP. How would you handle it?

I suggest you put some silkies in your coop. They love to kill and eat snakes. I get a real hoot out of watching them fight over snakes. Have a nice day Steve

    Coccidiosis!

Thanks for all the answers. It was pretty bad for a few days. 27 healthy chicks remain out of 51. The ones that were already noticeably ill weren't helped by the Corid, I encourage everyone who ever wants to get chickens to read a few day's posts of this section before they do it. I'm used...

    Coccidiosis!

Thanks for the replies. I used the corid because it was what the nearest feed store had. No one could figure out what the dose should be so I guessed 1 TBS per gallon water. It is powder, not liquid. The remaining guys look pretty healthy. Have a nice day Steve

    Coccidiosis!

One week ago I had 51 healthy 1 month old chicks in a chicken tractor in my yard. (RI Reds, Silver Wyandottes, and Buff Orphingtons.) Today there are 26. They started bleeding out last Sunday; it was a bloodbath. I put the chicks back into a large metal water tub I use as a brooder with...
