Hello we have 3 Duccle hens and a roo.
We hatched two of the hens and the roo at the end of May
The other hen, we just got from a friend 2 weeks ago.
She showed her with 4h so we didn't think we needed to quarantine but I guess maybe we should though she seems healthy.
However when I went out...
It's really weird
It's eating chick starter
Unmedicated
I think it's poop is normal
I mean it looks watery but the brooder gets so wet. I snapped a pic before I cleaned the brooder and after.
We hatched one single Pekin duck last week. Today when I was handling him I noticed his butt looks like this.
It hasn't looked like this before,
Normal?
Just a boy?
A prolapse?
It's eating, drinking and pooping fine
If something is wrong what do I do?
Thanks, we are quite attached to it already
I agree. Every time you open up your incubator the humidity changes and could cause the membrane to dry like shrink wrap prevent them from breaking out. Be careful removing the shell it's best to let it dry up and fall off. It's kind of like a woman's placenta because there are blood vessels...
I usually cull unwanted males between 6-8 weeks. At about 6 weeks is when they start picking on each other. If you do separate them keep then out of sight from the females.
There are quail groups on Facebook. Try them. Backyard quail, Game bird sales and more, quail breeders unite , and wild game birds unlimited. These are some of them. Hope that helps.
Sorry I didn't read the whole thread. Pharaoh quail tend to max out at 10-12 ounces a jumbo should be at least 14 oz as an adult bird. For the largest coturnix buy James Maire Farm Meat Makers.
White quail with spots on their heads are A&Ms. Vertebrates means Internal spine and bones. Invertebrates have a hard outside. This doesn't mean crests. I'm a mammal and don't have a crest.
No coop is needed. Quail lay eggs where ever they want. 1 sq. ft per bird and don't go more then 12" high because they might jump up and break their necks. Converted rabbits hutches also work. I keep ours in breeding groups of 1 male to 4 females. If for meat then we use a larger pen. Make sure...
We do dry incubation at 99-100 degrees until lockdown then we keep humidity around 65%.
We also leave the eggs in the turner and turn it off at lockdown. We found out the eggs hatch the best and fastest this way. Last hatch all hatched within 4 hours. The hatch before that happened over 3 days...
Best thing to do is to move them all to a new cage. We have a Rosetta male that no one likes and we had a pen of all females who wouldn't accept a new male even after moving to a new cage. We decided it was time for them to go and start a new line. It sucks but we just didn't have cages to...
