got some DURAMYCIN-10 (BY DURVET) package says it is good for CRD air sac disease and infectious synovitis. administer for 7-14 days but then says not to be used on chickens laying eggs for human consumption. Is there a product that can be used on laying chickens that we can use the eggs...
After my flock got wiped out. (Fox or some such creature) 5 good layers that we've had for 3 years. went out and got 9 $3 layers to reload the coop. They have turned out to be more like rescue birds than the plump girls we had. They kind of smell like chicken poop(way more than ours did)...
just looked up and saw a dog running off with one of our layers. "Old Houdini" was going on three years old. she got her name by getting away form a young Lynx that lost interest after catching her. hope the owners leave the ribbon on it's coller.
go ahead and try luring the bird to the kennel. Don't sweat it if it doesn't work. All livestock owners run the risk of losing animals. you've done what you could.
Chickengeorgeto please explain more
" Even if the damage is only surface deep the part of the comb that is dead will fall off leaving the chicken weakened and adversely affect a rooster's fertility and the egg laying potential of hens.".

FYI What I've learned about cold weather and chickens. My birds don't mind the cold at all. -16 F inside the coop last night. layed 6 of 7 eggs today. They don't like to walk or stand on snow. poop door to uncovered run is open all the time. water is changed three times a day due to...
Just my two cents.
night before last -12f in the coop. girls just fine.
two weeks ago two of the girls didn't want to join the rest of the flock after I cleaned the coop and spent a coupe of nights in a pine tree. I had to throw rocks at them before they finally came down.

Has anyone used a remote wireless thermometer over a long distance? My coop is about 75 yds from the house. I'm looking to find a way to monitor the temp inside the coop at the house. all the remote indoor/outdoor i've tried don't have the range needed. any success out there?
Our Maltese is great around our chickens. They re even teaching him a thing or two about finding treats thrown in the yard. Ever see a chicken and a dog fight over a bone? One on one the dog usally wins. But as with humans, two women outflank a guy every time.
we snuck in at 1 AM Fri day morning pulled out the unfertilized proxy egg and dropped in the 5 chicks we picked up earlier in the day. We made sure that the chicks had eaten and knew how to drink before the mission. the next morning we let the three other hen out to the yard to give step mom...
She set for three at least. we marked one egg to leave for her and took out the rest each morning. moved her from the nesting box to underneath it with the chicks.
