Will chickens fly out of an open chicken pen or does the entire pen need to be enclosed?

I don't have any chickens yet. I am so happy I found this forum. Before the chickens, I am researching and trying to learn all I can for now. I am hoping by spring we will have our chicken set up and have learned as much as possible.
