I'm being a little dumb here. I know mash that is what I have feeding them, T hey waste a lot of feed. I keep trying different buckets to cut down on the waste. So what is the difference between the pellets and crumbles.
My losses are at night. It was after 10 when i last checked the coop. They leave the rest of the chicken on the ground.
Someone suggested maybe an owl in the barn.
Looks like I am not alone with this problem. My problem just started a week ago
I redid the windows with 2 x4 wire in place of the screen I had up.
It looks like they snap the neck or bite it to kill the chicken then proceed to eat from the backside in. The outer feathers a pretty much still on...
Where do you get this stuff. I just noticed this AM that i have a couple with the loss of tail feathers and a butt that looks shaved. The others peck at her. These chickens are now 7 months old. They are Golden Buffs.
Use shaving, pine, ash and what is available. No PT. I have a good relationship with the local lumber yard and mill shop. I get them free for just cleaning out the hopper.
They are glad to get rid of them, otherwise they have to pay to get them hauled away . A bottle of wine to the shop manager...
Boy I wish i could give you some of my eggs. We have a cooler full. Hope the Christmas baking season kicks in soon. We have and over supply. My old hens just keep laying on. While my new hens are getting started with buckets full. 152 today
Any suggestions what to do with the pullet eggs. Can't eat them all.
Cold this weekend, but the girls don't seem to mind.
They now are getting some left over pie pumpkins. They like them.
Well, another day and another 10 doz. The pullets are starting to lay larger eggs, what to do with all the small eggs?
They just keep going and going and going. Not complaining.
Started to supply another indoor market which just opened Friday.
Have a great Holiday season. Best of the Season to...
I have rebuilt my horse stalls into the coop. I have a good relationship with the local lumber yard. Saw dust, pine shavings and lots of lumber trims.
Local bakeries supply me with plastic buckets for feeders, water buckets. When they break or get too bad, they go to the recycle bins.

I have added to t he flock now up to 122 and avg 115-118 eggs a day.
62 of these are from old hens. They are now year old + When do they slow down? I have been looking for them to start the molt.
I had one molt and boy was she crazy.
Every one close to me told me their hens stopped laying for some reason or other. Mine just kept plugging along. Daily avg 59 to 62. Seems like mine just like me and keep doing their job.
Adding another 90 to the flock just in case the "old ladies" want some time off. They are just about a year...
