I recieved a gift certificate for a pedicure when summer started, and had my toenails painted to look like ladybugs. Red with black dots. ( It's a long story, but I wanted them to match my car which is a VW bug, also painted to look like a ladybug)
I had to wear shoes that kept my toes covered...
I have a hen started crowing after we found a home for her rooster buddie. She even tries to attack/peck at me if I pick up any of the other hens. She is still one of our best layers, although she has slowed down the last two weeks due to molting. She doesn't do any of the other roosterish...
I recieved an offer from MEN in my e-mail that states that they will give plans for a free mini coop if you buy one of their e-books for $6.95. There are even a couple of e-books regarding poultry and game books. Not sure if I am going to take them up on their offer at this time, (I start...
I have not had much luck with roosters. We had two (at different times) but they were both mean and attacked our 10 year old, so I found homes for them on freecycle. I did stipulate that we prefered that they not be eaten.
We converted an aviary with a wire floor into a coop by adding wood sides and I covered the wire on the floor with sand. It is very hot here, so I wanted lots of ventilation. When we get our monsoon rains, straw mildews, therefore the sand works for us. About twice a year, I tip the coop over...
Perhaps you are right. I just went back out and she seems to be favoring one leg. They have only recently joined the big girls in the coop and there has been lots of pecking and shrieking. I think I need to build another roost!
Went to check on our chickens last night to see if they all put themselves to bed, and found one of our two 12 week old pullets alone hunched in the dirt. Usually these two girls are inseperable, so I went over to her to check her out. She was very listless, and when I picked her up and set her...
I also feel overwhelmed by the poop our 4 hens leave for us. I usually go out every other day and scoop it up with a kitty litter scoop. It goes into one of my compost piles. The rest gets hosed into the lawn. (such as it is, but that's another story.) I plan on separating the yard with some...
My 10 year old daughter finds it a blast to go out and know immediatly who laid that morning. I often hear her chastise the one(s) that didn't. When we had three with three different colors, it was very easy indeed. Since then, our Big Black Chicken (a brown layer) has died, and we have replaced...
I agree. My 10 year old wants to learn how to build a webpage, so I told her that I would teach her this year. Guess what she wants on her page?
Chickens.
So we have already had one discussion about what she can and can't post.
How fun. My ten year old daughter is filming her own documentary using her RCA Small Wonder camera. She is calling it "Backyard Sancuary", and of course it is all about her chickens. It will be a while yet before it is finished since I have to show her how to edit. I told her we could post it on...
I wold throw a shovelful of dirt on the pile after you throw on the other goodies. When I did this previosly, I had problems with spiders. Yuck!! If I had had chickens at the time, I would have let thm loose on the pile. When I get my own computer up and running, I plan to start a thread about...
Our girls were hiding their eggs again and I found two this morning that were laid either yesterday or the day before. It has been warm here; about 90 degrees in the afternoon. Are they safe to eat? or should I boil them and feed them back to the girls.
Thanks
Ooh, I've been in there quite a bit lately. I've been stalking the bedding plants among other things
I was just out again, and other than being very skinny, she was almost her usual crabby self (crabby with the other chickens that is, not me) I was cleaning out my fridge and brought out a...
