I didn't get 7 week weights on my JMF quail. Because it was tooooo cooold! Brrr!
Was going to skip 8 week today, but braved the cold and got it done! I've had trouble keeping their water thawed even with heat lamps in the sub zero temps we're having.
Still had some good weights, including my...
My guess would be that you have two different color varieties. For example Pharaohs & Golden Manchurians. Looking forward to photos. In my experience the earliest you can start to visually tell the sex of Pharaoh chicks is at about 18-20 days.
Today will be 4 week weigh in for my JMF Quail. I didn't get 3 week weights as I was away for 10 days. Got home yesterday and they've gotten huge! They're not right along side my other 'jumbo' adults but they look to be basically the same size!
I moved all my adult quail to a big run for the...
I weighed my week old JMF quail today.
XL Meat Phaorah ~ Average 40.9 grams (largest were 45, 45 & 48 grams).
XL Meat A&Ms ~ Average 39.6 grams (largest were 42, 42, 47 & 48 grams).
Golden Manchurians ~ Average 36.9 grams (largest were 41 & 44 grams).
Looking forward to the 2 week weigh in...
It does have heavy rubber mats covering all but the the very center. I have more mats to cover the entire floor plus an extra foot around the entire pen, put I have to work at getting them out from under furniture that my kids have put on top of them in my garage.
That said in my many, many...
I have about 35 breeders now that I'll likely thin down. I also have 100 shipped eggs on the incubator. Even if I have a great hatch rate I expect I will have extra males for the freezer. So I'm figuring I'll have around 60 to 80 over the winter in the big pen... Which will be covered! :D
Okay, I figured I'd cover the top, was hoping everyone would say they can't pop up that high and I wouldn't need to.
I'm planning to buy a 150' roll of chicken wire, so also covering the top with it shouldn't be a problem. (Will chicken wire be a suitable cover, or will I need a softer netting?)
Setting up a colony quail pen for the winter. Otherwise it will be nearly impossible and costly to keep non-frozen water available for them.
Here is steps 1, 2 & 3
More to come as we get it finished.
I plan to attach chicken wire around the bottom 3' to 5' to keep them in. It's...
Day 17 and one of the quail eggs my broody Silkie has been sitting on has hatched! Hoping at least one more hatches!
ETA: it looks like at least one more has pipped!
My A&M eggs will be here tomorrow! I am so excited to see how they compare! I have really enjoyed tracking the growth on my last 2 hatches. And I'll have something to compare the new lines to!
Excited to see more tracking & comparing quail growth rates.
I've been tracking my last couple of quail hatches. My current chicks are now 4-1/2 weeks old. I am looking forward to their 5 week weigh-in. One of my roos was over 220 grams at 4 weeks. I had banded the 8 largest chicks at a few...
I meant to add... The biggest problem I had last winter was keeping water thawed for my quail. This year they're all going in a big colony run or two for the winter.
