A little update on an older topic...
The chickens have fared pretty well so far this winter. We've had some single digit temps but the inside of the insulated portion of the coop stays between 30 and 40 degrees F. We had to "get rid" of two hens that turned out to be roosters. They began to...
The bears tend to steer clear of this subdivision, although we've had more than our share this year... I think it's because of late salmon runs but any way...
The electric fence is an option, I was thinking about picking one up at the feed store. Our german shepherd has kept bears and other two...
We incubated and hatched 20 eggs that we got from another poultry person in town. We planned on keeping 5 to 6 hens for egg laying and the rest our local poultry farmer was going to take to add to his flock. About a week ago, two black bears got into his chicken shed and killed all of his...
Here are some pictures of our chicken shed project. It's not all I thought it would be but the residents seem to love it and I guess that's all that counts. The neighbors haven't complained yet and don't anticipate that they will...
The design is basically a 6x10 shed with a sloped roof to...
Thanks for the feedback here.... My wife put a couple of the newborns in with the rough and tumble older chicks. The older ones seemed overly aggressive so we took the smaller chicks out. I fashioned a piece of hardware cloth to separate the brooder box into two halves and put the lamp in the...
Wow, I'm jealous. I've never gotten anything to grow where I live... I think it's because we get a lot of rain and not many warm days during the summer. My folks that live further north always have a great garden during their summer. Those zuchini's look mighty fine!
I have a set of 11 chicks that are approximately 11 days old and a couple chicks that are just hatching from a second set of eggs in the bator. Can I put the newly hatched chicks in with the older ones or is there potential conflict here?
Appreciate the feedback.
The chicks are good to go. They've since gone out and about in the brooder. All of them seem healthy and have started putting on feathers. They are growing fast, I guess I have to get to work on the coop. Thanks for the input folks.
This is my first attempt at hatching chicks so I was pretty excited when all the "fuzz butts" finally came out. We had 12 eggs overall to start, lost one to infertility and now have 11 eleven chicks in the brooder. I'm thinking they may be too cold so I might need a bigger light bulb (more...
Wife and children woke me up this afternoon and said that one chick was out of the shell and others were pipped. So far we only have one out and about. There are approx 7 other eggs that have a prominent pip on them. I also went ahead opened up the other air vent on the bator.
Update at 0351 am... I'm working the night shift, so I swung by my house to look into the bator...
Two eggs have "pipped", One is pipped on the top of the shell and the other I assume it's pipped on the bottom as I can see a little egg shell material in the bottom of the bator. I resisted...
There is "cheeping" coming from inside the bator... I'm anxious to see if any come out of the shells.... I will definately post some picks if any happen to come out.
As for the snowload, yeah...jee... Last year the snow off my roof was level with the top of my eaves. I have to shovel out my...
I'm on day 20 today with misc breed eggs in a LG still air bator. I can hear random peeping coming from inside the bator but I'm not sure which egg(s) the sound is coming from. No pips yet. Humidity is holding pretty steady at 73%, and 100 degrees. I'm afraid to try and mess with the setting...
Good question about the breeds hatching... Funny, It's a mixed bag of sorts I guess you could say. I have a couple blueish green eggs, some white, others brown.
I got the eggs from a local farmer who has a bunch of different chickens.
I'm planning on building an elevated hen house to keep it...
Hello everyone,
I've been lurking on here for a while and thought I'd post. I have about 24 or so assorted chicken eggs on day 19 now. They are coming along pretty good in a Little Giant still air bator. I've had a problem keeping the bator at a steady temp but all the eggs are coming along...
