Woah, that's pretty intense! I wonder if your other hens will continue with this coloring. Then you might be able to determine whether its the food or not a bit better.
I use pine shavings mostly, but also put in some coastal hay recently, and the hens seem to like it. I put it over the pine shavings. They will rustle around in it trying to get comfortable, but they will eventually get used to it. the shavings smell pretty gnarly when they get wet combined...
i guess it depends on what you are looking for in your flock, but I am inclined to say nothing. I have some and they are pretty awesome! I am getting an egg a day even though it has been cold and raining for the past week and a half here in the Texas Hillcountry.
