The chickens do not care what the floor is made of, they will crap all over it regardless. Linoleum would be easy to clean, but mine are on wood (pine). To use shavings other than in their egg laying crates is unnecessary because they generally do not roost (lay eggs or sleep) on the floor...
I still have a bunch of vertical nipples I want to use, but haven't for quite awhile. Can you tell me what size of starter hole to drill to start them. I checked out the vertical units and was taken aback at their cost. Thanks for any help you can give.

While not everyone has the tools, I found that by threading the PVC holes to receive the nipples make it next to impossible for the chickens to rip them out. Simply use a 7/16 inch tap.

What a great idea for winter. Only problem I have is living in living in the Arizona desert where scorpions and many types of poisonous snakes also live. I can see them making a home in the leaves when its cold and either I or my chickens stepping onto their nests and getting struck or bitten.
