They are EE then my bad spelling got me again. The Ameraucana are good looking birds with all the different colors and the temperament is more mellow than the comets.
I'll check out the article.
When we got the old layers I got the comets and my wife wanted some americanas. We have lost 2 of the 3 but we still have one. We hatched out chicks last year Comets and comet/ americana. We had 3 birds we hoped to be pullets but they are roosters.
I will try today to get a better pic. They just run into the coop when I tried to get a better shot. They still don't even eat greens, the other coop of comets fight over greens.
We got our new flock at our co-op this spring, 6 barred rock pullets and 3 Americana's. 2 days after they were home my wife said we had 7 barred rocks but one is just flat grey. We added 6 more barred rock when Tractor supply had them for a $1.00 . But now as they get older we wonder what the...
I use a 2 liter soda bottle with a nipple on it. I try it out first to make sure it is fine then I take one or two chicks and show them and it is game on. I also leave it low for a day or two so when they go under it they get water, they learn quickly. I also add Apple cider vinegar with the...
Well I did end up chicken wiring her in. The other coop has golden comets and they are nasty to outsiders. She took to it well. Now she has 7 chicks we gave her from the incubator and she took them all, even one that came two days late. Plenty of food for mom and chicks but I did end up taking...
I have 20 eggs at day 6 of 21 in an incubator. Almost all the eggs are golden comet with a couple Americana eggs fertilized by the comet rooster. I have a coop of only buff orps and the coop has a rear egg door 3 feet wide and just longer than a standard laying box. I had put in roll away...
I have a small 110 powered electric fence for poultry. One side is the hot wire and the other is the ground. All the hot wire strand is on plastic insulators with nothing touching the chicken wire or anything else. The ground is good with 3 good earth grounds that never touch the hot side. I...
For us it has been a bear that tore osb board away from a coop and ate the rooster and 2 hens. Last week we lost an old hen 10 feet from the house mid day. Turned out to be a coyote that I Think was rabid. My wife and dog chased it off the next day, she won't kill just not her. A few minutes...
Free range is a toss up for us. WE live in a rural town in Mass so we have all kinds of predators. WE never free ranged before last year because of this. However last year our first coop of Buff Orpinton's got out by accident and we had to chase them down, it was getting late and none were near...
Used to be trouble for us years ago. Now we add ACV with the mother to the water and all chicks are fine. Apple cider vinegar with the mother is a good probiotic for them.
We are ordering new chicks as well. I opted not to vaccinate them because we have a flock of birds that were born here over the years and they never got vaccinated. Our flock never gets exposed to other birds. But thats my choice and it may not be right for you.I add apple cider vinegar with the...
We recently had our chick disaster. 11 of our 20 chicks were taken in one night, weasel is my guess due to the headless ones we found in the brambles. I moved them to a Turkey coop for now and replaced our electric fence with a new one and got a new fence tester I was going to wait until spring...
We have some Broad Breasted Whites leftover from last year and I have two questions. At what age do they lay eggs and is there any chance they could be fertile eggs I could hatch. They will be 1 year in early May.
