Jay13, I installed a red light in the coop and noticed a major reduction immediately, in the nit picking and fighting amonst themselves.
My BO's are eight months old and have been laying eggs for a few months. I also noticed bald spots on the backs of a few of the hens. I came to the...
Since there are four or five favorite hens, they are getting trod to much. The backs of them are featherless. It is cold up here. I read an article on how to make a saddle for them. These are what my first ones look like.

Yea Sylvie, I am curious to see what happens next year also. I am going to go half a winter with no light (but I do have windows and the run is enclosed) and see how it goes.
LOL Ummmm wifezilla, I dont want to hear about warm weather right now, I have 4 more months of cold and snow.
Of...
I will agree with the others Silkie 07. I, like Morel, have been dealing with frostbite for awhile now and it doesnt look anything like that. Even at its worst, it wasnt that swollen.
Here is Ralphie, just after I put triple anti biotic ointment on him.
and here is my ROO with his frostbite...

That is really good to hear Cajunlizz! Glad to hear that adding light amounting to 12-14 hrs a day has served you well!

It is a good thing you told him, us women get accused of stealing the tools enough as it is!
You didnt have to specify which one was the light, I have my own power tools!
That is a GOOD idea! Hope the hubby doesnt find out! I would say that since that is the best then that is wonderful! I hope it helps. Please let me know!
vtchickenlady, My ROO is very used to me handling him. When he got frost bite, he would do everything he could to stop me from touching the comb or wattles. Once it healed up, he is so much better at just letting me rub the Triple Antibiotic Ointment in. So if your rooster is used to you...
I do not want anyone to get the impression that the tarp over the run is all that is there.
Under the tarp is a very rigid black snow fence. That helps with the snow load, a lot! That helps to support the tarp between all the internal supports. Here is what the run looked like before I put...
LOL, in all the background we did on the breed of chicken we should get the Buff Orpington stood out as the one who would have the least problems with the cold. We didnt know about the combs then, but we do now. I would have thought that the rose comb would also be good. Guess not. sorry.
I am very proud of the fact that my chickens (Buff Orpingtons) Have handled the cold. BUT........when I am greeted by this, I will put a heat light in the coop. I believe this is a cumulative thing. One, two, three days of cold (below zero) should not hurt your chickens. But when your temps...
Sunnydee, Can you see the three bumps in the top of the tarp? I have three legs helping to hold up the tarp in the run. I was also worried about the snow build up but it hasnt been too bad. I have cleaned the tarp off three times since snow started falling this year.
As far as the plastic...
This is a hanging feeder my hubby built so we could go away for two days with out worrying about the chickies.
He built a waterer just about the same way. We used the same kind of potted plant base, We cut one - half inch by 3/4 inch slot near the top thru one of the ribs. When you turn the...
