The temp does make a big difference. I had mine in the house where it's about 70 - 72. Due to a few escapees and my daughters freaking out about it, I moved them down to the heated basement, where it's about 60. Production slowed down quite a bit!
I don't think you should be wetting down your egg carton. I think, from what I've read here, that that would be too wet and that you'll encourage other critters (like mites) to take up residence, which you do not want to happen. As long as you are giving them produce (I use organic carrots) they...
You don't have to separate them. I do. I harvest worms from my oldest drawer of beetles. I put the pupae in their own drawers then add the newly hatched beetles to my drawer of youngest beetles. I've done different ways and this way seems to be easiest for me at this time.
You can harvest...
Have lost about 5 out of 100, assuming to pasty butt. Been cleaning way too many butts! Am going to try the eggs and yogurt. Already give ACV in the water. Tried the olive oil on a q-tip.
I have been seeing a weak one and pick it up and they have a huge rock of poop on their butt. Some chicks...
These girls let me get their eggs without going into a tizzy (like the ameracanas!). Great layers, which is very important to me. They come running when I'm around, knowing that food is likely to be coming their way.
Had a couple of roosters and they are now stewing roosters because they were...
I was so enthralled with the prospect of having those pretty blue, green and/or cream eggs that I overlooked the reality of these chickens. They just aren't great layers and since I want to get something in exchange for the $ and time I spend on them, it's just not working out so well. I think I...
I've had my worms for about 5 months now and it seems to be going really well. They are in organic wheat bran and given organic baby or cut up carrots which I put on a piece of newspaper or in a toilet paper tube. I wear a mask when I tend them after reading that tending them caused some people...
Yes. We have raised Freedom Rangers, been very happy with them. The roos are about a pound bigger than the hens and are just starting a pathetic type of "crowing" at 11 weeks when we process.
That's frustrating when they don't eat their food! Do you leave it on the floor so they have a chance to eat it? If they don't get anything else, will they eat it or not?
We have ours on a timer - goes on at 5:30 - 7:15 AM and then 4:30 - 8 PM to give 14.5 hours of light.
Read that they need 14 to lay so figured we've give them a little more to try to keep production up.
I wash mine (way too much poop and whatnot on them for me to consider not doing so!) and then put them in the fridge. They might sit on the counter for a day while I'm filling up the carton. When I want some to hardboil I put them on the counter for a few days first so they'll be easier to peel.
Oh, good to know. I'll never be able to figure out who's doing it since I have 75 hens! None of my customers have said anything, but both my daughter and I got one.
I collect my eggs multiple times a day so there is no way this way an old egg, but two recently have been incredibly bloody inside when cracked open. YUCK! Any ideas on what might be causing this??? Thanks!
That's what I was going to suggest! Take the feeder out for a day or two and make them clean up their mess.
I feed mine treats during the day (we get a LOT!) and then X amount of grain at night. It's expensive - organic, no soy, not in pellet form which I love - and I can't afford to spend a...
