    Update: We have started letting the chickens out of the run to range our large fenced back yard whenever we are home, which is most days. I had to add some straw to the rollout nesting boxes to encourage them to use them instead of several other places they were laying. Now all but one hen uses...

    It took us 6 to 8 weeks partly because we were learning as we built it. We are retired so we worked on it every day. I used to spend way too much time cleaning and filling waterers. Now, I just fill the covered buckets every day or two. The auto feeder really reduces the amount of food waste.

    When did YOUR chickens start laying?

    2 Red Stars (sex link)--16 weeks They and all my other hens (B.O., RIR, BR,) are now 17 weeks old and none of the others are laying yet. The Red Stars are laying daily now, although the eggs are relatively small. These were my first eggs.
