Shaggy, I have had some experience with aggressive roosters. The first one, a beautiful Buff Orpington, attacked me and my husband repeatedly with his spurs and drew blood. We kicked him away, hit him with a pole, but nothing helped. He seemed to like the fight. He ended up in the soup pot. I...

Thanks for this thread and great information. I wanted to add some meat chickens to my flock and wasn't excited by the CX. I ordered some Red Ranger chicks this evening to try out.
I know exactly what you are talking about. People are so far removed from their food source that some don't even realize what happens to get that piece of processed meat into the plastic package. Some of these people freak out on my prepping FaceBook page if the subject gets to processing my...
Here is an update on my Red Stars. They are now 7 months old and are great layers. I have ten hens including 2 Red Stars who all lay almost everyday. I get 9-10 eggs a day. The two Red Stars lay eggs that are larger, darker brown and rounder than any of the other chickens. I really like the...
Update: We have started letting the chickens out of the run to range our large fenced back yard whenever we are home, which is most days. I had to add some straw to the rollout nesting boxes to encourage them to use them instead of several other places they were laying. Now all but one hen uses...

It took us 6 to 8 weeks partly because we were learning as we built it. We are retired so we worked on it every day. I used to spend way too much time cleaning and filling waterers. Now, I just fill the covered buckets every day or two. The auto feeder really reduces the amount of food waste.

Wow . . . you did an amazing job! How long did this take? I like the details on feeder and waterers as that's what I'm thinking about now. Currently I just use a 3...
My two Red Stars were born February 12, the same day as the B.Os., RIRs, and Barred Rocks--total of 11 hens. The Red Stars both started laying at exactly 16 weeks old. None of the others have started laying yet at 17 1/2 weeks.
They are easy to handle and don't cause me any trouble. As...

“It’s only a chicken coop!”
I ordered the chicks to be delivered the week of February 13. We...
2 Red Stars (sex link)--16 weeks
They and all my other hens (B.O., RIR, BR,) are now 17 weeks old and none of the others are laying yet. The Red Stars are laying daily now, although the eggs are relatively small.
These were my first eggs.
debir1966,
I have twelve 16 wk old chickens--5 B.O., 3 Barred Rock, 2 R.I.R., and 2 Red Star. We built a new coup and run for them this spring which I wrote about with pictures on my blog, http://NCPreppers.com. When they were chicks, I used the traditional waterers and hated them! I have a...
