It actually hasn't happened for a while. Usually happens after a long, leisurely sandbath. I have 2 roosters who've just realised they're boys so my girls dont have as many long leisurely sandbags at the moment!
I have a loner hen too. Shes a Bantam. She's mean to other chickens no matter the size or breed. But she is an AMAZING mommy. She lives on her own or with her chicks if she has babies. When they're free ranging she sometimes goes to say hi,she submits to my Bantam roo if shes in the mood but...
Does anyone else have a chicken that sometimes appears lame after sandbathing? A few times now,a chicken has been disturbed during sandbathing and not able to stand or walk properly for a few mins. I've even had one try and stand up then fall over and literally roll down the hill. That was...
On the positive side,I found one of the girls I thought was gone. She's hiding on a pile of eggs. All infertile and I can't physically reach her so will have to wait till she comes out to eat so I can grab her.
We were not home so wouldn't have heard anything. The last few times an eagle took our birds (over a year ago), they took the entire bird with them leaving only feathers.
I will keep an eye out to see what's what but still doing the perimeter search since we have seen a stray dog on our...
I live in suburbs. Everyone has fenced properties, some are electric fences. We have lost 3 chickens in the last week. 2 were babies and might have been taken by an eagle but disappeared without a trace. The other was a fully grown hen, easter egger, nice and big and strong. I found her with...
Multi vit in the water might be helping a bit. The one obvious boy is still not fully feathered and has some weird fluff/bald patches. The other 2 are all feathers but still only 1 has a tail.
I'm keen to see how these guys grow up. Their surrogate mom is doing a much better job mothering...
There are tail fluffs! And they both appear to have a tailbone.
Brown without a tail is definitely Male. Comb is darker and bigger every day. The white without a tail has a tiny comb, still very pale, same as the brown one with a tail.
I noticed today that one (without a tail as yet) has a definitely more pronounced orange comb. He also has much fewer feathers than the other 2. Perhaps theres a bit of a protein deficiency happening. I'll add some supplements to their water for a day or 2 just in case.
The white one without...
I took some photos of them this morning. 6 weeks and a few days old now. The white one looks like it might have a few tails fluffs starting. One brown has an actual tail. They all have small combs, all still have pale coloured combs,no red showing yet. They hatched under a broody hen so have...
Quite possibly. I had read that pullets develop tail feathers faster, but I would have thought by 6 weeks there would be some tail feathers! Hoping I don't have any boys but we shall see.
Laid by a Lohmann layer hen. Rooster is a miniature Bantam who is possibly x silkie. Hatched by Ameraucana hen. Only one has a tail so far and that one has had tail feathers for a long time already.
I have no idea what breed my Bantams are. I got the hen as an adult and she hatched the rooster Bantam from an egg someone gave me with no idea who the parents were. So it's just a big mystery :-D
Her mommy has the extra toe as well. Is this typical? They're Bantams. No idea what type. Mommy is white with grey legs. Daddy is white but from unknown parents and is smaller than mommy hen. He has yellow legs
Baby has yellow legs and extra toe on each foot. Other babies have grey or yellow...
