Jumbo Coturnix vs. Texas A&M & Coturnix

I've had standard coutournix and like the ability to visually sex em. I hate vent sexing: is that lil bit of foam from a roo or a freshly bred hen? Do Texas A&Ms require vent sexing? Also, If I understand it correctly Jumbo Browns are just standard that that have been selected/breed for...

Keeping chickens cool in the summer?

I'm looking into a misting system both for chickens and quail. Can you talk a bit about your system? # of misting nipples/area. Frequency of on time and # of times/a you run it.

    Egg bound

Just had a pioneer hen die from what I'm sure was egg bound condition. Other pressing issues precluded taking time to address her issue. Now in researching treating this condition I see the potential solution, calcium, is a potential easy fix. My question to the experienced is how do you...

    barnacles?

I have 5 australorp hens and a roo in a tractor for fertile collection. Recently 1 is laying eggs with light brown specks on the outside of the egg. These "barnacles" easily scrape off with fingernail but I've never seen this. Anybody else?

    Molting rooster still fertile?

This project involves black australorps. This enterprising young man has a buyer for up to 150 straight run chicks. We plan to build 2 small (4X12) tractors with a roo and 4 or 5 hens in each tractor and incubate every 7 days. If good fertility should be able to fill the order in 3 loads...

    Molting rooster still fertile?

Wasn't sure how to title this one. My question is: is a molting still rooster able and interested in covering the hens...i.e. Is there any fertility loss and does molting make a chicken or just kinda feel crappy. I know I'm not interested when I feel crappy. And while I'm asking of this...

    hot pepper for rat controll

Well, increased egg production? Really? Sounds like a two-fer! Im gonna give it a whirl. Ill report back if it seems to reduce my rat feed losses. Will also set up some game cameras to see if I can document rat response to the new HOT feed. As far as egg production anything would be helpful...

    hot pepper for rat controll

I had a thought and wondered if anyone here had experienced with using cayene powder in chicken feed to repels rats. It is a common technique in backyard bird feeders to keep squirrels at bay. The birds seem unaffected and I suspect its a mammal issue thus rats would be repeled but the birds...

hay vs straw in the coop/run

Seems I read somewhere that hay was a bad thing as the chickens can gorge on it and get impacted. Can find that now so im asking here. Reason is that 3 or 4 times a year I till the run and bust a bale of straw over the freshly tilled earth. Chickens have a grand time for 4 or 5 days and it...

Dixie Rainbows/Pilgrim chickens - first meaties

MMM only offering straight run at this time? When I inquired as to why they replied, "They are a fairly new flock and are being offered as straight run only at this time." My question is (and this is most certainly a corporate secret like The Colonels secret recipe) a) what are the parents of...

My girls won't roost at night!

Wow...yours learned much faster than my flick did. I had 25 mixed brown layers from Murray and they went from brooder to tractor that didn't have roosting bars (my fault). After I cleared the house they were to go into they were moved and they continued to huddle in the caged run. Every night...

    Broody Hen Thread!

Ok, I'm a guy who incubates but last year I had a couple of older hens that went broody. I made HUGE beginner mistakes. I had 4 hens sharing setting duty on 3 nests BUT I failed to mark eggs and the rest of the flock continued to lay in those 3 nests. Needless to say I had a mess. 3 days...

    Mixed brown layers

farnorth said: Oh, I would have guessed White Plymouth Rocks as they are more common and not as many hatcheries have Rhode Island Whites. Now have to go look at what the differces would be. Well it certainly looks like you're probably right. When attempting to ID these mixed flock I googled...
