Introducing a Single Black Australorp Hen to 14 new chicks

Thank you. Ideal does not have the variety we need to order today. Next ship is 7/11. Will our lonely hen be okay by herself until we get chicks mid July and then raise them a few weeks and then introduce? Any other suggestions?

Introducing a Single Black Australorp Hen to 14 new chicks

Our flock of 14 was one month shy of laying age. Tragedy struck yesterday and we lost 13 birds. We have one lone remaining Australorp hen. She is doing fine and happy go lucky. However, we are ordering 14 chicks today and will want to introduce our new chicks to her when and if it is possible...

Waterer nipples with 5 gal. Bucket reservoir help

I took a fitting from Home Depot that was in the brass section of plumbing, (I believe this fitting was supposed to be to a water heater...) The fitting has threads on the non spout side. I drilled a hole in the side of the bucket that just allowed the threads in, but stopped the welded metal...

Order from Ideal Hatchery in Cameron TX. They ship anywhere in the US and have a minimum 3 chicks per order and no minimum per breed. Their selection is wonderful and their staff is great.

    Types of Litter

I have searched all over the internet and have come up with conflicting information on the type of litter to put in the bottom of my chicken house as bedding while I raise my chicks (who will be here on the 15th!!!!!) I have had people say that pine shaving dust can be poisonous to the chicks...

    Chickens for the Texas Heat

Thanks so much! I will definitely try your method and recommend it to my "never introduce" friends. I will post pics of my chicks when they arrive and pics of my coop later. I am still building it. It is a rather colossal project for a 16 year old, but my dad has showed me the use of all the...

    Chickens for the Texas Heat

The run is 8' x 5' by 3' tall. and the house is 4' x 5' by 4' tall (two stories) a colossal structure for a supposedly movable chicken tractor. and when the girls are a bit older, they will be allowed to range in a open top pen that is much bigger.

    Chickens for the Texas Heat

When the girls get a bit older and less of an attractive for hawk snacks, they will be allowed in a larger pen with plenty of room. This is only for if we leave to go run errands or something where we can't keep an eye on them that they can still have some space. Thanks for your concern though...

    Chickens for the Texas Heat

I do not have a lot of space, as they are in a closed-in chicken tractor, so I have not yet decided whether I could hatch chicks or not. My chicken tractor has a yard space of 8' x 5' and I am running 15 chickens in it. So a rooster would take up space and feed and not increase egg production...
