I'm having the same problem. I'm using nesting buckets, and the inside of the larger bucket and the outside of the inner bucket developed mold. I trashed it and will start over. I'm thinking I will need to change buckets every week or so.
Thanks, math ace. I'm feeling the same way. 2 of the chicks are off to a rocky start anyway, and are a bit fragile. One has a lame leg and the other had his back pecked open when he was 2 days old. They're doing surprisingly well though.
So I just treated my adults with 1/2 cc Valbazen because I saw worms in the poop of one of them. Roundworms, I think. Anyway, I have babies out there who are a week old, and they're with mama who was also treated. Should I treat the babies? Or should I just wait until I actually see worms in...
I am trying to find a home for my 6 month old Lavender Ameraucana cockerel. He's beautiful, but he does have a single comb. He isnt aggressive, but neither is he friendly. He's more afraid of people if anything. He looks like he'll be a good roo. Gentlemanly to the girls. I hate to get rid of...
Allison, I'm do sorry about your girl. I worry about the heat too, especially when the girls are laying, sitting in a virtual oven for an hour or more. I set up a fan for the coop today. Outside, they have a mister, a wading pool and frozen watermelon a couple times a day. I hope it's enough...
It's so exciting, isn't it? I went through the broody thing last year for the first time. I was in complete awe through the whole process. Can't wait to see the babies.
Super cute. When I moved to Fallbrook last year, a weasel came near me as I was chilling with the chickens. I didn't know what it was at the time and exclaimed, "What on Earth are YOU!?" It promptly ran away.
Egads! Hubby discovered today that the coop is INFESTED with mites. Checked 3 out of 10 birds and all were clean, so we're guessing these are the ones that hide out during the day and feast at night. So we cleared out all the bedding which is where most of them were. Seriously icky. I...
I would still go for it. You should be able to tell right away if Wink is being motherly to them, i.e. not pecking them (obviously, lol), letting the chicks go under her, etc. Good luck and please keep us posted. Pics would be awesome too :)
Hi Alison, how is your hen doing? I really don't know about mineral oil. We've only used olive oil and maybe up to 4 times a day. My Lizzie loves to eat pine shavings too, but I think it may be due to the fact that she's the lowest in the pecking order. We might remove pine shavings from the...
