Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

Hello all. My Blue Ameraucana hen is a year old this month and she has stopped laying for about 6 weeks now. I got a beautiful light blue egg every other day from her. She has been molting as I can see new feather growth on her back and muff areas. Is this typical? I notice that my EEs are...

    Easter Egger Leg Color Question

I have an Easter Egger that has yellow legs and she is the solid color of a New Hampshire with a beard. She laid her first egg yesterday and it was olive green. I was expecting brown eggs because of the legs being yellow. I thought the legs should be green or slate to get green or blue eggs...

THE FIRST EGG MY CHICKENS LAID

My Red EE laid a beautiful olive green egg yesterday for the first time. I was surprised it was olive because she has yellow legs so I was expecting a brown egg. I thought EEs had to have green or slate legs to lay green, blue or olive eggs. I learn something new! Always exciting.

    Wyandotte opinions

Some breeds that are considered average to good layers will have interruptions in laying from time to time more than excellent layers. Plus the older they get the less predictable they are. I have a Blue Ameraucana that is a year old this month and she stopped laying about 6 weeks ago. I notice...

    New chickens not laying eggs.

I had the opposite happen.....I bought 3 new girls (6 months old) and they laid the first day but my existing flock ( 1 yr hens) stopped laying....go figure. It took a couple of weeks for everything to get back to normal. Every situation is different with chickens.

    Started Pullets from Murray McMurray....experiences?

I thought I would try ordering 7 started pullets from Murray McMurray Hatchery. They advertise them to be 15 to 22 weeks old. I am adding them to my current flock and didn't want to start with chicks this time. I'm worried about what the condition of the pullets will on arrival coming by mail...

    leading up to egg laying

That's great. We all do things differently. In 10 yrs, I have never had a problem with mites as my coop is very clean and I clean out the boxes regularly and use an organic all natural pesticide. My OCD about being clean carrys over to my chickens. Happy Chicken Keeping!

    leading up to egg laying

For me, I start my girls on Organic Layer at 20 weeks. I put straw in my nestboxes and a white ceramic egg in each box. They always lay in the box. I rotate my flock every 2 years to maintain high egg production. Good luck!

    chickens aren't laying... any ideas?

I agree with barred2rock. Add a small 3 to 4 inch tall trim board along the front of the boxes to prevent egg breakage. Your boxes should be 12 inches x 12 x 12. As for the breeds, looks like white leghorns, barred rock and black australorp or black sexlink. All good laying breeds. They should...

summer time not getting to many eggs

I'm having the same issue. We are in Central FL and my 1 yr old girls have stopped laying for a month now. I have added Quik Chik vitamin and electrolyte supplement to their water to boost them up. Murray McMurray Hatchery sells it. Once we get to September, egg production should pick up. Good luck!

What age did your roo start crowing?

Good. Being that he is the only roo, I hope he doesn't crow much. Time will tell. Right now, the girls still dominant him. He tries to be dominant, but a few of them will peck at him and he runs. No attempts at mating yet either. In time he will rule the roost.

What age did your roo start crowing?

Yes, his crow was a funny noise like someone in pain....LOL! He did not crow at all today. I hope he is a quiet roo. I will keep him. He is so pretty and a sweet boy. My neighbors have been used to hearing hens make noise when they lay for the last 9 years. They haven't heard a roo before. We...

What age did your roo start crowing?

OMG...Ralph crowed for the first time this morning. He flapped his wings and let out this little half crow. That was it....so cute.

What age did your roo start crowing?

Are you able to hold your roo? Is he friendly? My Ralph is a sweety and I can pick him up. The girls are still bossing him around. He tries to stand taller than them to dominate but then gives in...kinda cute to watch.
