Chickens falling asleep on their feet: update

UPDATE: We injected them all with Duramycin last night. This morning they seem absolutely fine. They were thirsty but otherwise completely normal. Still don't know what it is but maybe a mycotoxin? It has been raining a lot lately. Also, a few mushrooms have appeared around where they...

Chickens falling asleep on their feet: update

Another in a series of poultry disasters. Came home from a day away and noticed that one of the roos was falling asleep as he perched on the fence. It wasn't nearly dark, only about 6 pm. Others started doing it too!!! They all seemed fine this morning, Two were already roosting in the...

How do I use calcium gluconate for prolapse?

Has anyone out there used this? I calculated the dose but I'm wondering if it's daily or twice daily and for how long usually? I gave her one dose yesterday and today she seems better. Any help would be appreciated!

How do I use calcium gluconate for prolapse?

I have a hen with a prolapse. I've read about it and want to give her calcium gluconate in case she has a calcium deficiency. Does anyone know how often and for how long I should give her the 23% injectable? Just once? Once a day? Twice a day? For how many days? Also, the bottle I have...

Prolapse: Should I bandage the vent?

I did find the calcium gluconate in the cattle section - thanks!! From the links you provided, I found the dosage but can't tell how often or how long I should administer it. Do you know? Also, the bottle I have doesn't have any preservatives. Do you know how long it keeps? I'm going to...

Prolapse: Should I bandage the vent?

Thank you! I'll look in the cattle section for the calcium gluconate. I've been giving her, and everyone else, oyster shells but will try to find the liquid to boost the level. Today it's still getting smaller and drier but still not staying in. She seems better though, stronger and noisier.

Prolapse: Should I bandage the vent?

Thank you!! I'll stick with the Preparation H. What about calcium supplements? I read somewhere that prolapse can be caused by a calcium deficiency. I started offering her oyster shells, which I wasn't giving previously on the assumption that her layer mash had enough but the advice was to...

Prolapse: Should I bandage the vent?

Yesterday I found one of our year-old hens with a prolapse the size of a walnut. This is a first for me and I'm hoping someone can give me some advice. The prolapsed duct also has something attached to it, that looks like it could be a hemorrhoid. It didn't look as if it had been pecked yet...

How long to treat wry neck?

I'm hoping someone can give me an idea of how long the vitamin therapy should continue? I've read a lot about wry neck but I can't tell if the daily doses of vitamin E, selenium, and Vitamin B are something that is needed at the beginning, for a boost, or should be continued throughout the long...

How long to treat wry neck?

Thanks to everyone who gave me very helpful advice on treating my hen with wry neck. I've been giving her Vitamin B, Vitamin E, and selenium supplements for a couple of months now. She is much improved and can eat and drink on her own. She still shakes her head often and gets "stuck" with her...

    Is This Sudden Death Syndrome?

I've started them all on tetracycline, just in case. Tonight, all the ones left look fine, but so did the 2 that died. Does anyone have any experience? Or ideas? Thanks!!

    Is This Sudden Death Syndrome?

Does anyone know anything about Sudden Death Syndrome? I've had 2 apparently healthy and vigorous layers die with no symptoms or warning in 24 hours, out of 7 hens. They are about 3 years old. They weren't huddled in a corner or anything, like sick chickens. The only abnormality I saw after...

Wry Neck Not Improving: Am I doing something wrong?

If it took a few weeks for yours to start obviously improving, I'll keep at it. I guess I expected too much too soon. I stopped the aspirin a couple of days ago because I thought it might be causing digestive problems. She doesn't seem worse so I won't rush to re-introduce it. The turmeric...

Wry Neck Not Improving: Am I doing something wrong?

I'll add Vitamin B too. Thanks! Did yours improve gradually from the start or did she get better faster towards the end? I'm willing to keep this up for a long time but I'm concerned that I'm not seeing a lot of improvement.

Wry Neck Not Improving: Am I doing something wrong?

Update: today she held her head up a couple of times on her own. It pretty quickly reverted to stargazy though. Does this sound to anyone as if she is likely to improve? Can this be permanent? Anyone have any idea what the anatomical description of this condition is? I mean, are certain...

Wry Neck Not Improving: Am I doing something wrong?

Thanks for the article. I generally panic about Mareks whenever something weird happens but a vet has told me that it's very unlikely in hens as old as mine. I don't know about aspergillosis. The Merck manual says it results from mold, so hopefully it's not contagious, if that's what it is...

Wry Neck Not Improving: Am I doing something wrong?

I have a 4 or 5 year old Buff Orpington hen suffering from what I am assuming is “wry neck.” She seems healthy but can’t hold her head up. It flops over until she is looking up at the sky with her head upside-down. At first I thought it might be an ear infection and gave her antibiotics but...

Wry Neck seemed to respond to meds but now worse. What's going on?

I started giving her turmeric tea on Saturday, when I was able to get to the store. She had been getting worse: increasingly contorted neck, not holding it up at all, and seemed to be getting weaker. Yesterday she seemed stronger, although still couldn't hold her neck straight. I also started...

Wry Neck seemed to respond to meds but now worse. What's going on?

I'll give this a try! I tried some metacam I have lying around but it doesn't seem to have made any difference.

Wry Neck seemed to respond to meds but now worse. What's going on?

Thanks! I'll try focusing on anti-inflammatory treatments. Maybe force-feeding her has been making it worse by hurting her neck?
