i give mine mealworms and supplements from June till about Jan. I've been raising hens for 17 years and have never had any issues with my hens when they molt. This hen is about 6 years old. She is not molting at this time as far as I can tell.
I have a hen that is exhibiting many of the same symptoms. We are in coastal northern Ca. We found her in a corner of the hen house today, we initially thought she was dead. I have her in the house now. I was able to get her to stand for a minute before she sat down again. She seems stiff almost...
no formal necropsy, I did have a local chicken guru friend take a look at her after she passed and he said it looked like a or tumor or an egg that went back the wrong way, it was small not like a normal looking egg. But there was really noting I could have done.
Thank you all!
Despite our best efforts my poor girl passed away this morning. I started to bring her in the house at night a few days ago and kept her in the laundry room. She was eating good and seemed to perk up but it all must have been too much for her in the end.
This one had me stumped. She never...
She has lost weight and I do feel her keel bone
Her belly is soft and squishy, her crop is fullish at night when we put them to bed, I've been dosing her with chick boost that has electrolytes in it and vitamins in it, it's an all in one vitamin and electrolytes with probiotics in it for...
I currently have a Barred Rock hen that is about 4 years old. She's been acting similar to egg bound with the waddling, tail down and puffed up for the last few days. It's hard to tell if she was laying last year but I'm guessing she did but maybe not every day. She is also drinking a ton and...
(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
We have had chickens for about 16 years. I only have heavy breeds for eggs. I love to get new and different hens. We once had 2 black Langshan hens that lived for over 12 years.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now? We have...
Thanks for all the reply's. We've been having some weather issues here in Northern Ca and have been without power for the last several hours.
Meanwhile, while we had a break in the rain, I was able to switch out the hen that was in isolation and put the rooster in instead.
We raised him up with...
We have 9 chickens, last spring we got a straight run of 6 chicks to add to our existing 3 (we lost 6 to coons ) we got one roo out of the group, he's a beautiful Easter egger but mean as all get out. He's comes after me in the morning when I let the chickens out of the coop in the morning and...
Her crop was soft and mostly empty, that was the first thing I checked having had several hens with impacted crops over the years. This was so sudden and not like anything I've seen. I've disinfected the water, and dusted the coop with diatomaceous earth just to be on the safe side.
Well, my big girl proved us all wrong! She has rejoined her sisters, they rallied around her and she walked on her own back to the coop. Her strength improved with every passing day, she is no longer loosing her balance when she walks although she sometimes will tip over if she bends her neck to...
Our 18 week old Domonique pullet is very sick. We noticed yesterday she was puffed up and sitting alone in a corner. We brought her inside offered her some mash with yogurt which she ate a little of, I gave her some water with electrolytes in it with a syringe. She is very weak this morning. I...
We had a horrible raccoon attack on my flock on Wednesday and lost 5 of my 9 hens. 3 were unhurt and one, our Jersey Giant was acting like her leg was hurt but after she calmed down I noticed that she was unsteady on her legs and would tip forward and use her wings to balance her. I've been...
Update on Golden...I've been feeding her mashed up pellets with grape seed oil, applesauce and yogurt mixed with water. I've been offering her food ever hour or so and so far she has eaten about 2 tbls worth and I've been giving her about a tablespoon of water after each feeding. She's much more...
She's been in the house with me all day just dozing on and off in the bin...when she was outside with the other hens she was acting ok just walking around not doing usual chicken stuff tho. She pecked at stuff but didnt eat anything or scratch around with her sisters. She did drink some water...
Her breast bone is rather pronounced...Is there anything we can do to clear the blockage and get her feeling better. She was out in the yard with the other hens just walking around and not eating. She did drink some water tho.
ok so I took her outside for some fresh air and to see if she's feeling better and this is what she pooped...my daughters are keep an eye on her in the yard. She is still not eating thus far, but is making her way out to the other hens.
