    incubation time: hen vs incubator?

Thank you for your speedy response! There may indeed be viability or fertility issues with my friend's eggs. Also, those eggs had some very hard shells, so one wonders if some peeps just could not get out? See my own answer, below. I had put 6 eggs in a nest for her today, and she was only...

    incubation time: hen vs incubator?

I am answering my own question! I found my calendar from 2016, and it was exactly 21 days for the eggs under the hen to hatch - but well into the 22nd day (about 30 hours later) for the incubator eggs. So for THOSE eggs, in THIS incubator (a Genesis Hovabator with an automatic egg turner) it...

    incubation time: hen vs incubator?

Hello Chicken Friends, I have had chickens for about 7 years, now, and have had only one broody hen, a Welsummer (Begonia). She is a very faithful setter. In theory, she should be able to easily handle 8 to 10 eggs, but I have found that in the past, only 5 or 6 stay under her, reliably...

Comment by 'djdavis' in article 'Fire Safety in the Coop and Barn'

Excellent article! I do not live in a particularly cold place, but we do occasionally have a week or two where the temperature may remain below freezing in the winter. The hens have been fine - BUT my poor rooster has gotten terrible blisters of frostbite on his comb and wattles. I HATE using...

    Antibiotics for chickens - suggestions?

re: Baytril: very sadly, this drug is illegal for chickens in the USA. An avian vet I visited agreed that this is a wonderful drug for many conditions and he is not happy with this law, but nevertheless, it is illegal.

    Nystatin... Anyone know the dose?

New reply to old thread; I am on a steep learning curve with chickens, but have learned a bit about sour crop due to previous experience. The liquid nystatin does need to go into their beak - and GREAT CARE must be exercised. That hole you see in the back when you open their beak wide is...

NOT egg bound, but swollen posterior

I was anxiously awaiting an egg from my hen, Tuvalou, which would hopefully be fertile, so I could put it under a different hen who is currently broody. That is why I happened to feel her bum, to see if an egg was imminent. It feels much larger than any of my other hens' back sides, and since...

    Temperature and Humidity Gauges

I also need help regarding achieving that 99.5 degree target in my old Brower still air incubator. This will be our FIRST attempt at hatching eggs. I have two of those little glass Brower thermometers and two digital thermometers with remote probes. The two with the probes both read about 5...
