I guess it doesn't matter how old they are - Broody Moe started being broody when she was only 6 months old! We still get eggs from her, and have given her some fake eggs in exchange. She does get picked on (literally and figuratively) by the others, though.
I have 3 brahmas - all named Moe - and 2 are broody, one more than the others, so she's Broody Moe. They have been broody since Thanksgiving, and we take her out of her box every day - sometimes twice, and that's about all we can do! When it warms we'll maybe let her hatch a brood....perhaps...
We have a well-insulated coop - R25, which is better than some home "down south" - and we plan to have only 16 over winter. and there's a thermostat and heat lamp. Some say the deep litter method helps keep them warm. thoughts?
We have austrolorps, americanas, orpingtons, brahmas, and...
New to chicken raising - and wanting to get birds that are very cold hardy! This will be our first winter with birds, we have grand plans of building them a solarium so they can go "outside" during the winter. As winter will start in oct/nov and continue until april, I'd love tips about how to...
I hope you're right. I just can't think what she ate. the coop hadn't been used by any chickens before, she did bleed, and I gather it wasn't easy to get the cord free. and she's really small. feisty, fearless and tiny.
I know I was told a month ago that this couldn't possibly be the wishbone from my chicken, but take a look. the bone and cord are next to my wedding band, for perspective.
what happened was she (now named "Cord") swallowed a cord which got stuck. Our friend pulled it out gently and out...
how sad! Do the survivors have PTSD? are they freaked out by things?
We too, lost a couple of birds - 3 who were impossible to catch to toss in the coop and huddled under the coop to stay warm. but yukon nights aren't known for warmth and it was wet, and we figured they just got too cold...
We will be turning 3/4 of our flock into dinner next month, and doing it ourselves. I'm worried my kids might be a tad upset by it, but most likely it'll just be me sobbing in the kitchen, while the kids try to help. In fact, my son has already named one little guy "dinner". {sigh}
hi - I'm new to this site and to chickens - but have a query. while on holiday, one of our 5 week old chicks (think it was the buff orpington) swallowed a piece of twine it found. Our housesitter/chick sitter pulled it out as gently as possible, but ...( and here's where it all gets...
