I keep coturnix quail with fantail and show king pigeons. The fantails are pretty and fun to watch, plus they nest and perch higher than the quail that stay on the ground.
I can have a pair of Seramas shipped across the country, get a banty of many kinds or a Silkie locally. I'm torn. I'm guessing Jodie won't care the breed. I worry about the stress of shipping fragile birds. What extra effort does a silkie need?
If you search here on byc, someone has a pattern for a diaper using a sock. Try a baby sock? There is another sock pattern on Pinterest. I'll post links tomorrow if you can't find them. I have them on my laptop.
Thanks for your condolences. I'm trying not to be angry. We raised pedigreed cats for ten years and never once had an accident with kittens, many housed in bathrooms. (I no longer have a note above the toilet reminding users to keep the lid closed. BIG MISTAKE.)
I was really attached to...
One of my two Serama pullets died today. Benita drowned. Someone left the toilet lid up. Her buddy, Jodie, is beside herself. They were brooder buddies and now Jodie is alone. At bedtime she was pacing and smashing about. She just settled down. I put a dark towel over her cage. I'm hoping that...
The place we are camping is actually on the prairies, farms all around. It is coyote -- not bear -- country.
I suppose the tips I'm looking for are in regards to the five hour car ride. Once we're at the trailer I'll just set up the girls' cage like I do at home.
Diapers are a good idea. I...
I have just started keeping Seramas as house chickens. For many years I was involved in breeding and showing pedigreed cats and my family fosters dog rescues. Unfortunately we have had "fun" with ringworm, tapeworms, and staph skin infections that are all zoonotic (shared between species...
My coop has two open nest boxes beside each other. I'll set a bowl of water in the unused box. Thankfully we've had rain for a few says now.
I tried getting the Kings to incubate quail eggs last year but they kicked them out of the nest. If they'd allow it I'd put Serama eggs under them, but...
What is a parthoid? I'm told the boy lost a toe when he froze it. I will add bedding to the nest to cushion the eggs; good idea. Rachel is smaller than she's supposed to be, but Finn is a good size.
This article suggest that increasing humidity may help. I'm going to try spraying the egg and parents or setting a sponge next to the nest. We're very dry here.
