Which is better? Picking your own Chicks or ordering them from a hatchery?

Yeah, I just want egg layers and I really want to avoid picking a rooster on accident... Roosters are not allowed in my area. I wouldn't have the heart to eat it (or kill it)... and if I couldn't find someone to give them too, I don't know what I would do with them. ><

Which is better? Picking your own Chicks or ordering them from a hatchery?

I've been doing a lot of research. ;) The breeds I'm looking to get (in the near future) are: Australorp Delaware Rhode Island Red Star (sex link) If the Delaware and Star are not available, then these are some substitutes: Black Maran Speckled Sussex Buff Brahma

Which is better? Picking your own Chicks or ordering them from a hatchery?

Thanks AprilsFrizzles, I've contacted Belt Hatchery (by email) to see if they allow on site pick up (they are the closest hatchery to me). I probably won't hear back from them for a few days. If they don't allow it... which would be weird, I'll probably order from Meyer. I've heard a lot of good...

Which is better? Picking your own Chicks or ordering them from a hatchery?

What does MPC stand for? I'd like to check them out too. Thanks Blaze. ;) Also, I read that it's cheaper to order from a hatchery closer to you, to cut down on shipping costs.. so that means that The Belt Hatchery would be the closest to me. Has anyone ordered from them or seen there facilities?

Thanks for your input DelcoChix. After hearing everyones opinion, I've decided to order my chicks from a hatchery, when the time comes that is. ;) Thanks again everyone! If you have any more advice, please let me know. ^^

Which is better? Picking your own Chicks or ordering them from a hatchery?

BlazeJester, Thank you so much for you input! I really want my hens to think of me as "mommy" so, I will most likely order them from a reputable hatchery now, and pray they arrive safe and sound. Has anyone ordered chicks from My pet chicken? They have many breeds, many that I'm looking into. I...

Thank you, for your offer nikkipar! But..at the moment I can't own chickens. Hopefully I'll be able to soon. All I can do at the moment is gather information for the near future. Info on good hatcheries, coops, breeders... Etc. Thank you again! Your so sweet! ^^

Which is better? Picking your own Chicks or ordering them from a hatchery?

So far, I haven't been able to find any breeders in the San Diego country area. I know that the closest hatchery to me is up in Fresno (The Belt Hatchery). Would they allow me to drive up there and buy chicks from them in person? That's what I was thinking of doing if I can't find anything else.

Which is better? Picking your own Chicks or ordering them from a hatchery?

Hi Everyone, I'm new to the site and don't have any chickens yet, but I do plan on getting some in the near future. I've been wondering: Is it better to pick the baby chicks yourself from a feed store (so you can see if they are healthy or not), or ordering them through a hatchery? I know...
