    What is ailing my hen?

Light brownish with some white on it (like all my other birds who are perfectly healthy). Of course, since she's been put in the cage she hasn't pooped. The only thing I see is a watery discharge on the bottom of the cage. She's only been in there for 2 - 3 hours at this point.

    What is ailing my hen?

I have a hen, age unknown (I've had her for less than a month and didn't get the age from the former owner ), that is exhibiting some odd symptoms that I have no idea what could be ailing her or how to fix her. At first I thought it was egg binding, but I soaked her and probed her vent with no...

    Incubators Anonymous

Well, when an empty incubator stares at you accusingly, you have to fill it! I'm going to be looking for fertile eggs soon. My incubator has been empty for 2.5 weeks and it's killing me!

    Dry incubation advice

I just did my first dry incubation and kept my humidity between 25 and 35% during incubation and upped it to 55-60% during hatch. I don't know how the humidity pump works, but all I did was keep two calibrated hygrometers in the incubator, ran it for a few days before setting my eggs to see...

    Got The Itch

How I rationalize it to he-who-must-be-obeyed (my husband): I have to test this out to make sure it works. We don't want to be wasting eggs our eggs while I work on getting the knack of this thing! Of course, I've got a LG still air incubator and from what I understand it's notorious for...

Things you never said until you had chickens.......

I can only hope to raise my chick to be that friendly with my almost 3 year old.

Final Tally of Third Attempt at Hatching

Not shipped eggs. All of them were from my flock. I'm fairly confident that it was the fan that caused the issue. I'm going to clean the incubator and try once more, this time being sure to keep a fan in the room at all times. I have never experienced hatching shipped eggs, but I have read...

Final Tally of Third Attempt at Hatching

Goodness! Such a difference! I calibrated my gauges before incubation this last time, so I know my readings were accurate. And I didn't get the condensation on the viewing windows. I hope you get a better hatch this time!

Final Tally of Third Attempt at Hatching

So, I recently finalized my third attempt at hatching in a still air Little Giant incubator. Hatched: 1 Blood ring: 1 Not viable: 1 Early Quitter: 1 Late Quitter: 7 Late Quitter with Internal Pip: 1 The one chick that hatched is doing wonderfully, if a bit lonely. I poured over all my notes...

Things you never said until you had chickens.......

You want to stay up there all night? Fine! But don't come sqwuaking to me if something tries to eat you! Said this just last night to a couple of birds roosting in a tree too high for me to reach them and put them back in the coop.

Two questions, inbreeding chances and when can I incubate?

Thank you! I currently have 2 roosters that have only just started getting their business on this year, so I should be good for a while!

Incubation Temerature & Humidity Is IMPORTANT, Trust Me. From Dayton Sales

I've read elsewhere that the temperature range doesn't so much determine sex as it encourages those eggs carrying the sexes you seek to have better hatch rates and the others to have a higher fail rate. Personally, I find the thought odd that sex can be "maniuplated" like that. I may be wrong...

Two questions, inbreeding chances and when can I incubate?

What exactly does this graph mean? How does one read it? I may just be having a hard time since I'm usually never awake this early, but I am interested in having my own "renewing" flock and am also concerned about inbreeding down the line.

    day 22

There are a few possible, but the simplest way to say is either Light Brahma or mixes. I'm fairly certain the one I have that has already hatched is a mix.

    day 22

YAY! I'll be entering day 21 of my hatch in about five hours and I've got one chick so far. Ten more eggs in the incubator with no signs of pipping yet. I feel your anxiety!

Thanks! Here is the best photo I could take through the window on my 'bator. I'm so excited! Official "hatch day" doesn't begin until 2 PM today (five and a half hours away). This guy was a bit early and the other eggs show no pips or wiggling yet. The wait is killing me!
