Hello SlowBro...
It's a very gradual opening and closing of the door. Depending on the weather for some reason the door takes anywhere between about 30 to 45 seconds to fully open and close. One thing is certain... the chicks are in absolute no danger of being hurt by the door!
hello newfy1
WOW, people still reading this post!
I don't see why solar wouldn't work. The electric draw is very minimal particularly if you use digital timers where you can set the door to open and close for 1 minute. That's only 2 minutes a day on a small amp pump. I would seriously...
I still use my 5-gallon bucket with a birdbath heater however I did make two changes due to the extreme cold I have in upstate NY. Temperatures drop to -10 at times.
1. I swapped the birdbath heater from 50watts to 75watts. I found that the 50watts unit did freeze when the temperature...
Thanks guys for the reply... the coop/run is completely secure. I have many predators around and they have tried and failed to get to the girls. I think this year I might let them choose for themselves. Also... the coop is plenty big for them and I double checked for any issues like mites and...
I have an enclosed secured run with a roost. I also have a roost in the coop house. The temperature where i live has begun to drop to below 32 degrees at night but my 4 barred rocks still prefer to sleep in the roost outside. Should i remove the roost in the run to force them to sleep in the...
Actually your assumption is wrong. As I said earlier... I use a cheap re-chargeable UPS (uninterruptible power supply via a battery) that can power the door for about 3 weeks without electric. When electric does resume...it recharges the battery. In essence... I never have to worry about...
"The Ador1 has a self-contained battery, requires no incoming power line and will not suffer from power outages" ... I keep a UPS on the electric line. Power outages wouldn't stop my pop door from opening and closing as I live in a rural area and power outages are frequent... but that's a good...
I also have Barred Rocks. I began using straw and other stuff in the nesting box. After 3 years... the only thing I keep in the nesting box is cut carpet. I found that to be the best. Though the carpet needs to be replaced once a year or so... My girls don't seem to have any issues with...
Hello tcstoehr: Thank you for your reply. I'm confused... why would I want to spend twice more money on the ADOR1 ... when my cheaper solution works just fine? And btw... I don't believe the ADOR1 wouldn't fit in my coop. It's way too high... much higher than my opener! What benefit would I...
Hello ShellyN... I use my DIY door only during the Winter. Currently, I expanded the run on my coop so I needed to move the "box" from the back to left side. After I finish the expansion of the run, I'll have to re-hookup the fishing line... but i have a couple of months before that becomes...
I think we need some more pictures. Maybe a couple of pictures of the entire setup instead of sections would help? In picture #3... we can see the inside of the house and ceiling with a couple of small holes... what's above that? Are those small holes vents?
Raccoons would concern me. My brother had his run with Chicken wire also. A raccoon ate the heads of his chickens somehow through the Chicken wire. But I would also have concerns about mice and the chicken feed.
MMSculpture... Got it.... my mistake. But I would recommend that you add/purchase those hinges last. The one you show... I would be awfully scared to use them. Keep in mind that when the door is open, you'll be under that heavy door. If that hinge gives... it could knock you out...
Hmmmm.... I live in Upstate NY and I believe my Winters resembles yours. I also wanted cold hardy birds and so I purchased four Barred Rocks hens. They fit that bill.... cold hardy. But I give them 10 Square feet in their run and I'm not sure how much per their raised house but it seems big...
Overall... I'm very happy with the Garden Coop.
Why would you want a locking hinge on the inside wall? The Garden coop run is protected by the Run door so it's not necessary to lock the Coop house wall. Though car hinges does make it simple and nice. I have several inches long 2x4's I...
"what is your transfer mechanism toward the door?"... wow... that sounds sophisticated. You might be disappointed! ;)
My original plan was to anchor the fishing line to the container on the right. But the most annoying issue of this setup was tightening the lids of the container and not...
rfeyer... I agree. I'm not very concerned about the pumps as that I use a digital timer and each pump is used once a day for 1 minute. The container that is being drained, doesn't get completely empty within that 1 minute so the pumps never run dry. I'd be happy to put up more pictures, but...
I have barred rock hens... they are considered a hybrid breed... both layer and meat birds. Though I have no intention on eating them.
When I installed the nipple system, I simply gathered them and showed them by hitting the nipples with my hand which caused water to leak. That got their...
Not sure what you mean by "This!"....
"Chickens CAN get fat. I never stated that they couldn't."... I never mentioned getting fat or anything else like that. Just sharing a story.
regardless... me too... I feed my girls "free choice" as well.... I keep a 30lb feeder in the run filled...
