My Leghorn slowed to about one egg a week last winter & she has slowed down already . I live in Colorado & it is still in 50ies during the day. I won't get another.
I have always thought that the eggs need to be checked at the VERY minimum once a day. I think the longer you leave them in there the more tempted they will be to go back to old habits of eating them.
Wow!!! Some of the birds. I am SO jealous . I live on the Western Slope of Colorado & have been wanting a silkie for about 9 months. I have to have a hen as the city I live in doesn't allow roosters. Every time I think I have found one somebody beats me to it. At least I can follow this...
I have one that is just 18 wks & laid her first egg this morning. Small egg very thin shelled. I thought it took them awhile to mature so this surprised me.
Where were your chickens this spring. I pulled a 5 gal bucket full of mint roots & all, put in the chicken run. Chickens wouldn't eat it & they kept scratching it so it wouldn't root. Mint & oregano are the two things I know the chickens will leave alone. I feed mine all the weeds out of the...
My grandson had a question & I don't have the answer. How often do ostrich lay & do they sit on a clutch? My grandson & I were watching a show yesterday where they said that one ostrich egg equals two dozen chicken eggs. My grandson asked "Do ostrich lay like our girls?" I know I can always...
Dear Plund BLESS you. I have stage 4 breast cancer & even though I am in CO, I can say with 100% certainty that your gift is something very special. We can be having a horrible day, then we are gifted a treasure from a stranger! Thank You for your support!
I sold 2 yesterday & had one of the ladies that had never bought fresh eggs before call me to see if the eggs were spoiled because the yolk was so thick. I have been selling eggs for about a year now & this is the first complaint I have had. A nice rich yolk is one of the reasons I have my...
Thanks for the info! I have been using straw for our coop for about a year. Living in Colorado I had mold issues this spring & was thinking of using something else. Can you wash the sand & reuse in in the coop once it has dried out?
I have had chickens a little over a year now. We had a surplus of pumpkins last fall, I put them in the cellar & have been cutting them in half & giving to my six girls as treats. I have not had any problems with worms. I have learned a lot about worming. I didn't even know that pumpkin seeds...
All I do is just rinse my shells off & set them in the window to dry. I break them up & feed them to my hens a couple times a week. Have never had any sick chickens & NO egg pecking.
I get a feather stuck to a egg once in awhile, I thank them for the extra gift. I don't wash mine unless I am selling them. I have 4 regular customers & 2 have asked me not to wash theirs as they want the bloom on them. Also one of the two has asked me to leave them on the counter for him...
Well an update on the old hen. I don't know what she was thinking. Sunday she got off the nest & went into the coop & on the roost with the rest of our girls at dusk. Yesterday she never got back on the nest that I noticed. Silly old hen.
I don't use weed & feed on the back yard & had given my hens some grass clippings. I was told that the residue from gas & oil in the lawnmower could be harmful. With mowing season just around the corner I want to know if it is safe or not. I know no better peeps to ask than BYC. I have...
