    Trader Joe’s Broody Success

The last one never hatched so 9 it is. They are settling in and learning how to be big chickens from their chickie mommas. One of which is super protective and growls and pecks at me whenever I get close. They’ll be safe around her for sure.

    Trader Joe’s Broody Success

We woke up the next morning to 8 chicks! There were still 3 left and a 9th hatched yesterday. Looks like they’re white leghorns which is pretty much what I suspected. I candled the other 2 and one looked liked it stopped growing about a week ago but the other is fully grown. I tossed the one and...

    Trader Joe’s Broody Success

Had two broodys with no roo so hubby went out for 2 dozen Trader Joe’s fertile eggs. We switched the eggs out in the evening and they didn’t seem to mind so off we went on out hatching adventure. They decided to brood behind our shed so we put a cam on them for their security and our...

Coon Killed my Broody on Day 7- Moving to a DIY Incubator

So I was able to take a picture of all six eggs. I'm not really sure what they should look like at this point but the only thing I really noticed is that they have a large dark area in each one. I just used an led light with duct tape around the top where the egg could sit but I'm going to try a...

Coon Killed my Broody on Day 7- Moving to a DIY Incubator

I'm a newbie. Can you tell? Can anyone tell me how to improve the humidity? I placed additional dishes of water surrounding the eggs but am only at 20%.

Coon Killed my Broody on Day 7- Moving to a DIY Incubator

So Radioshack in my area did not have a thermostat so I was finally able to get one at Home Depot today. I had been afraid of fire so I did not have the lamp on while I was at work Monday. My hubby worked from home today so I was able to leave it on. It was so dang hot here today and when I got...

Coon Killed my Broody on Day 7- Moving to a DIY Incubator

Yes I'm replacing the bulb this morning. I just didn't have any incandescent bulbs in the house when it happened last night. I stayed up until 2am checking on them.

Coon Killed my Broody on Day 7- Moving to a DIY Incubator

I guess my RIR had an amazing hiding spot because she is back this morning! I am thrilled about that! The eco bulb is a 14watt but it doesn't seem warm enough in the box but I'm out to get my temperature reader this morning. I'll know for sure that way. I'm hoping the set up will work.

Coon Killed my Broody on Day 7- Moving to a DIY Incubator

My broody speckled sussex was on day 7 today of sitting on some Trader Joe's fertile eggs. I got her the eggs last week to allow her to hatch some chicks instead of separating her into a wire cage to break her broodiness. Well I was away today and came home to find a raccoon running away from...

    fresh eggs

I make mine in the electric kettle. Saw it on an Alton Brown show one time. It works great! Just set and let it come to boil. Then let the eggs sit in the hot water for 12 minutes. Perfect every time.

    Chicken Alarm Clocks!

The 3 older chicks have been sleeping on top of the coop for a while now. The babies have now taken note and are now sleeping outside too. A few days ago the older chicks started making LOUD squawking noises waaaaay too early in the morning. I have neighbors and am always concerned about the...
