Hello everyone, been a long time since I have been on. I have a bunch of personal drama going on which has saddened me. Some of which has caused me to have to find homes for all of my birds. It pains me to go out to the coops and see emptiness and to not hear crowing. Thats why I havent gotten...
I would have to disagree. I feel it is a male. For the size which screens young and the size of comb and the copper coming in the shoulder I say a dark male.
If the Marans grew up together and separate from the red, or difference in size then any breed would do that. If they all grew up together from hatch than its not typical.
Well first, 10 weeks is really to soon to get a really good overall opinion of your male. Second they are not ideal photos to judge either. The pictures need to be of them standing in a natural position, with the photos taken chicken level from the side. Maybe a pic of each side would be the...
If you want good assessments of your birds you need to get a good close, side shot of any bird you want info on. Make sure they are taken at bird level. Also post larger photos. These small far off top shots will not do it. Eyes should be like a dark pumpkin orange.
Also, on a side note. Please dont take this personal, but the way I read this, you were trying to use the gold, and mix match breeding. If you are not interested in really improving the breed why are you asking for help on other areas of the bird?
So you said you are trying to increase the gold? Try to get a bit longer neck. His topline is not right. You want an angle going from the hackles down to the base of the tail. By him having an incorrect level topline it also makes his tail stand to high. Its hard to see with this size of pic but...
Even though he still is quite young, if you have the room, I would still look for another male. Good males are hard to find, and even if you find a nice one you don't know what he has in him. So test hatches take time as well. Now is the best time to find one. Everyone is thinning their flocks...
Since we were on the conversation of white feathers growing in after molts and the like, here is another perplexing occurance. Went out to the coop today and I was looking at the 3 Black Copper females I have. They are still in molt. Two of them are almost done and one is still a mess. First my...
I do agree that maybe it should be clarified in the SOP.
But my thoughts are that since the outlines for an SOP is to have a true representation of a variety and breed. In the APA they state its to promote good type and health. Maybe they felt that tufts don't represent a huge issue to focus or...
Lowatt,
You can try Rodney Reeves out of Ga. I got my Birchens from him. I have a lot of people comment how well they look. They are fairly consistent as well. I got 11 to hatch and I kept 6. 2 males and 4 females. So 50% I felt were good enough as Birchens go to go forward with.
Ok, for the life of me can't find the old posts from a long time ago. When I was starting it was recommended using copper chested males to use to add color to females. Then someone posted an alternative to using copper in the breast as males should be solid black per sop (which I agree). The...
Snowbird,
I thought months ago when everyone was discussing ways to add color to females you didn't feel that a male with excessive color was the answer? I do believe you were dead set against it, that you felt having a solid black chested male with flames was the type of male you preferred? If...
The APA SOP book doesn't have the Marans in it. But it has info on cutting for defects in it. You can find the BCM SOP on the Marans chicken club website. And there ar diagrams for type somewhere. I'm on my phone so I can't cut and paste.
