I recently moved to the Olympic Peninsula in far NW WA. I just had 20 trees cut down (a small fraction of the trees on my property, but even so it was a difficult decision); 19 of those trees were Thuja plicata or western red cedar, which is NOT a true cedar, but is related to them. The limbs...
Some of those sites will tell you what you want to know. Believe it or not, the most useful so far has been the http://www.cooksinfo.com site. They do a good job of describing the origin of the breeds.
Please be aware that I am finding the Wiki list to be full of redundancies. It turn out the...
I've been working on collecting information about all of these, as well as some other ducks. When I finish (soon), and if I remember, I can post my spreadsheet here.
The guy who is putting together the Wiki page is doing it as a pet project, and seems a bit territorial about it. I tried to clean...
So sorry for your loss and best wishes.
I lost an 8-week old pullet on Christmas Eve, so I know how you feel. I don't want to kill the predators, but I do want to protect my flock.
So far, the possums haven't bothered my birds. I've had a great deal of problems with hawks and racoons this year...
Nslangton & leadwolf1, I am so sorry to hear what you a both going through. It's just awful.
I'm not a doctor or a vet, so take what I am asking with a pound or two of salt.
Nslangton, is there any way one or more of the weeds you gave them were toxic? Down here in Texas, several livestock...
Hi Lisa,
All those wonderful natural remedies and prayers! Lucky chickens!
The guy who ran the crew that built my coop is also one of my permaculture teachers, Kirby Fry. He was talking about planting an "herbal ley" for my chickens. The idea is a garden full of herbs, forbs, and other plants...
One of my close friends is planning an aquaponics system that sounds very similar to your setup in many ways. He's planning to use tilapia in hope of supplementing both his family's and his chickens' diets. He says the tilapia die if the water temp gets below 53 degrees (or something like that)...
Beautiful coop!
If you are putting gutters up anyway, have you considered collecting and storing the water off of the roof? If you store it properly, and use first flush drainage, etc., you can give it to the chickens. Just a thought.
Down here in Texas, we are very big on rainwater collection...
Lisa, I'm so sorry about your loss.
Thanks for this info - it's really useful. I hope I never have to use it, but it's better to know, just in case.
I have never fed my flocks medicated feed - they've haven't ever been sick with anything to medicate. I just found out for a fact that they don't...
Kim, hang in there! You aren't alone. We understand.
Everyone disses Ideal's SG Dorkings, but mine looked more like bricks on short sticks. Most were rectangular front and back. Not one duck foot in 20 of them. All had 5 toes on both feet (though the 5th toe didn't always point upward, it was...
Lisa, I wish I could help, but I can't. I am so sorry this is happening. Please keep us posted, and best wishes for a speedy recovery.
I'd quarantine, if possible, ASAP.
A bit off topic, but someone on the Facebook Ameraucana Chickens group (https://www.facebook.com/groups/65816532358/) posted a picture of an EE pullet that looks to my uneducated eye like a blue silver, maybe a lavender silver, but somehow very unlike the SG Dorking pattern. Until I noticed the...
Me, either! I do BBS Ameraucanas. I did have some SG Dorkings for a while, which is why I am interested in this pattern.
It looks to me like a diluted silver, maybe a double diluted silver, but completely unlike the SG Dorking pattern. Until I noticed the rosy breast, it looked like a lavender...
Yes, I did mention that it is an EE pullet in my original post.
I'm not interested in whether it is an EE or an Ameraucana. That point is moot; that horse is dead and buried; that dog don't hunt; that song has already been sung, etc. Let's not drag up that old chestnut again. Can we, just for...
A bit off topic, but someone on the Facebook Ameraucana Chickens group (https://www.facebook.com/groups/65816532358/) posted a picture of an EE pullet that looks like a diluted silver to me.
What would you call a silver with the dilution gene? A blue silver? A silver blue?
Anyone heard of these...
