    Chickens not laying eggs

We are in the same boat. Our chickens are producing 0 eggs. Ours are definitely molting as the coop has a comical amount of feathers everywhere. It is frustrating to get 0 eggs, but not much you can really do about it, besides add some extra protein to help them along. I do see lots of new...

Two and a Half year old hens not laying many eggs

I really can't remember if they molted last fall, but yes, now that I think of it, I am seeing a bit of feathers laying around right now.

Two and a Half year old hens not laying many eggs

I live in CT. I haven't noticed any worms or parasites. Besides a few bare butts from some feather pulling, they all seem nice & healthy. Maybe it's all part of a natural slow down due to age & shortening days. Thanks!!

Two and a Half year old hens not laying many eggs

We have 16 hens (Orpingtons, RIRs, Barred & White Rocks, etc.) A few younger ones, but 12 are 2 1/2 years old. They were all laying eggs fine early spring and we were getting about 9-12 eggs per day. Now, we are getting 2-5 eggs per day. They aren't THAT old yet to be slowing down this much, are...

    Two Mean Hens

Thanks for checking, I should have posted an update. I was about to setup two separate jails last weekend, but I think we have someone who will take both of them. So, that's the easiest solution for us, since we have that option. The rest of the flock is doing so well without these two, I...

    Two Mean Hens

Great ideas! Never thought about putting the bullies in different jails, but that definitely makes sense to try. That also may determine if it's one, or both, being bullies. One weird, or not, thing to note is when the two bullies are in jail, they don't pick on eachother, so their bond must...

    Two Mean Hens

Thanks for the advice, everyone!! I may give them one more shot at jail without seeing the rest of the flock. Otherwise, you are right, they are a danger to the flock and I'm not doing the flock and favors by letting this harmful behavior continue.

Can you eat eggs that have been cracked?

We eat our cracked eggs if the crack has not punctured the membrane inside. Like sourland said, we do eat it as soon as we can, though.

    Two Mean Hens

I had briefly mentioned our situation in another thread about mean chickens. https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/1095494/really-mean-chicken/20 Quick Recap: We have BSLs, RIRs, Barred Rocks, and Buff Orpingtons. Our flock is a little over 1 year old and just recently 2 of our black sex...

    Really mean chicken

Interesting.... Our flock is about 1 year old and just recently 1-2 of our black sex links have become bullies. From what we have observed, typically one of them attacks another hen and the second will join in. Sadly, the two being picked on are our buff orpingtons, which are the friendliest...

Ended Official BYC Coop Page Contest #7

Thank you everyone! We are thrilled to have won! So cool to see that everyone enjoyed our coop as much as we (and our hens) do! Putting a roof over the run in the summer. Will be sure to add updated photos!

Thank-you! Sometimes things look good on paper, but this plan worked out really well....in real life! The boys continue to enjoy their Tree Fort and are such great helpers with the chickens, espexially now that we are finally getting eggs!!

    Our Very First Eggs!

We are so excited! Got our first egg this past Thursday, which makes our chickens exactly 18 weeks old. Very surprised to see an egg that early, but since then we have gotten three more. We have Buff Orpingtons, Barred Plymouth Rocks, Rhode Island Red, and Black Sex Links. I have no clue who...

    help with mean chick!

I am also new to having chickens and when our barred plymouth rocks were brand new, all three of them were the craziest, fiesty chicks we had and I was sure they were going to cause trouble. Well, now all the chicks are about 16 weeks old and the barred plymouth rocks are the most friendly and...

Thanks! The chickens love the first floor and the boys love the second floor. So, everyone is happy! LOL The boys are dying to camp out up there, too. Guests love to check out the Fort Coop. All the kids, and all those young at heart, also love climbing up to see the tree fort! :)

    The Fort Coop

Hello All, This is my first experience owning chickens and therefore my first time building a coop. So, here we go.... The game plan changed many, many times, with input from my two young boys. During my pre-build brainstorming phase, I needed to plan our backyard layout. I wanted a swing set...

Pellet Stove Ash for Dust Baths?

I found this, so pellet stove ash seems fine, just in case anyone was wondering, like I was. https://vermontfarmheart.wordpress.com/2013/04/19/providing-suitable-dust-bath-areas-for-your-chickens/

Pellet Stove Ash for Dust Baths?

Hello, I am new, so still soaking in all the info I can for our new chicks. For dust baths I hear people use a little bit of everything.... Sand, Food Grade DE, Peat Moss, and even wood ash. As far as wood ash, I read people use campfire ash and woodstove ash. How about ash from a pellet...
