Dead ilkie gooey from beak to shoulders. What killed it?

Here is hoping! Now if we can just keep them cool in this heat wave.

Dead ilkie gooey from beak to shoulders. What killed it?

CAUGHT IT!!! I went down to put the silkies to bed and thank goodness I went down a little earlier than planned since there was a very distinct black body half into the coop. I peaked through the window and a black snake was peaking right back at me. Thank goodness the more savvy birds were...

Dead ilkie gooey from beak to shoulders. What killed it?

I used to have guinea fowl... they are NOISY! I knew they were good for eating ticks but not that they were after snakes. I'll have to consider that as an option, but I also know they have a habit of gravitating towards roads and I'm not sure I can deal with more deaths. I'd read that spreading...

Dead ilkie gooey from beak to shoulders. What killed it?

Thanks folks, I was considering putting one of my roos in with the pullets to act as extra security against snakes. I will be able to tell my fiance that he was right. :) I just wish it hadn't gotten any of my babies and ESPECIALLY not THAT one. Massively frustrating.

Dead ilkie gooey from beak to shoulders. What killed it?

Thank you. I'd viewed the site before and nothing on it that matches what happened to my pullet. Powder Puff was gooey/gummed from the head down to his shoulders but every thing else was pristine. I even looked for tracks and couldn't find anything but it has been dry so the ground around the...

Dead ilkie gooey from beak to shoulders. What killed it?

I have my suspicions that a snake tried to eat one of my silkie pullets, but can't seem to find any images confirming this. The peep didn't have its head through the fencing so it wasn't some kind of animal sucking on it. Only one tiny spot of blood on a wing, but otherwise not other injuries I...

Diary of a Crossbeak: Support for Special Needs Chickens and their Keepers

Sadly, this was not a happy ending. Mucky Pup died in between my two check ins this afternoon. I had hopes that the fact she was drinking and taking the vits would allow her to get better, but I think there was some thing I couldn't see causing all the problems.

Diary of a Crossbeak: Support for Special Needs Chickens and their Keepers

I have been checking this website for a ton of information ever since our new peeps arrived. Thank you to those who wrote about wry neck (currently treating a silkie) and splay leg (sadly it wasn't splay leg but major leg deformity) and now... I have a faverolle peep that I thought was just a...

Faverolle peep can't clear her mouth of food: RIP Mucky PUP

Thank you for responding! I am going to post over there now and see if they can help. The silkies were hatched out from eggs. The wry neck we think was caused by another one of the silkies who is just realizing that there is a pecking order that needs to be established. Turns out wry neck can...

    Chicken's beak has strange "extension"

While I've never seen that before, I would think more likely than not you may want to look up beak trimming and remove it so that it won't impact her ability to eat. From your pic (thanks for a clear one) it appears just that her beak has continued to grow out.

    Chickens in Mystic CT...

Hello there LobsterChicken, Also a Mystic resident and I know the answer for if you live on the Groton side of Mystic. After speaking with both the lovely Zoning and Animal Control, I can now answer that question. In the Town of Groton, we are allowed to have chickens IF we have 5 acres of...
