I have 4 chickens, two are green egg layers and 2 are brown egg layers. They all molted this spring but the green egg layers have not laid an egg since.
They have a light on them and they are only ~1.5 year old. The brown layers are doing fine as far as I can tell. However they seem to be...
Oh no, please say it isn't so!!
I don't know what I am going to do.
She is two weeks older than everyone else in the pic. She is the same size or a little smaller than the others her age. She also is not dominant she is about 3rd in the pecking order.
Is there any hope? My ordinances don't...
I have 5 standard sized hens (well, they will be in another month or two )
My question is how much food will they eat in a month (or a week or however you want to break it down)?
I know that it isn't good to keep it around for too long so I don't want to stock up on it, however larger...
Hi everyone!
I am in the Pullman area, that is about as far east as you can go in washington (only 8 miles from idaho).
I grew up in the Seattle area and went to the UW for my undergrad. Reading all these posts from you over on the 'west side' is making me home sick. However, me and my 5 girls...
How do you guys "predator proof" your coops? What are the best methods for the different kinds of predators?
I really appriciate everyones help... I have been feeling a little overwhelmed lately.
They have to go!
I have 5 chicks, two of them are 2 weeks older than the other three. They are all out growing the brooder. And the olders are nearly fully feathered.
As far as the social hierarchy goes will I be totally messing things up to put the older ones in the coop a few weeks before...
The metal roofing was left over from another project. Originally it came from our local grange supply, and I don't think it was that expensive.
The plant was a volunteer. It is a lilac, we have a huge row of lilac bushes.... well really they are more like trees at this point. We are continually...
Thanks everybody!
I have an araucana, RIR, australorp(?), and a barred rock.
Unfortunately my coop is no where near as big as these discussed here. I should have explained my set up a little better.
The coop (not including the nest box) is only 4' x 5' and not more than 3.5' tall at the...
Thanks everybody for your help!!
That's funny that you say that, I did call her fancy for a long time. My husband was out of town when they came home and I had promised him that he could name one. Unfortunately he named her McNugget (we will not be eating her) and it stuck. I still like to call...
Thanks!
I got her at the same time as another labeled Barred Rock, and this one seems different. This one was out of the "assorted fancy breed" batch at the feed store.
As compared to the barred rock she has an all white chest and a black speckled beak.
But really it wouldn't surprise me if...
Look how cute! And it's insulated!
The door will fold down to open and the steps will be attached to that.
From my living room window, you can see the steps have not been attached yet:
The lid opens, as does the lid to the nest box lid:
I keep reading different things about where the roost should be placed, but I am still a little lost.
How much head room should there be?
Should I put one out in their yard too (for nicer weather)?
I understand that there should be a min of 8" per hen, but is it better to be one long one or...
How big of a "yard" do standard breed chickens need? I have 5 little ones. The house is on the smaller side, 15 sq ft. I want to give them plenty of room to be happy!
How deep should the fence be burried? I live in a small city, I think the biggest threats come from a possible racoon or...
